Neighbor calling about music

Hey guys. Odd question. My neighbor called and told me that "her house was shaking" from my music.

I live in a single family house and the neighbor is aprox. 30 feet away from me.

After being amazed that she could hear my music I was a bit pissed that she called when I'm in my house doing something I enjoy.

I have a Polk LSI system with two PSW 150's that seem to be creating the problem.

Is there any cheap way of "deadining" the sound. She claimed that she could hear the music but it was the bass that was annoying her.

Any ideas so that I don't piss the neighbors off ?

Thanks

TK

You could hang your listening room with QuietRock sheetrock. But that's expensive.

My biggest suggestion is turn it down or move out of town. I've come to face the fact that I don't live in the middle of nowhere anymore, and therefore have to be somewhat courteous to my neighbors.

QuietRock will NOT stop lower frequencies, I know. I just installed an entire side of a TH with it and the lower registries were not affected. Vette, I have to ask. What kind of gear are you running?

I ask because I live 6" away from two neighbors, without QuietRock and I have yet to get any complaints. I do play it rather LOUD as well. :D

Probably coming from your subs, try something like a subdude. Is you house a concrete slab or pier and beam ?

I have Polk LSI 15's, LSI center, rear RT1000's and side RT 5's. I have double PSW 150's. Powered by a Pioneer Elite 94.

I do play it rather loud but all my windows are very new and the basement is a concrete foundation.

I relieze that bass has a weird way of transmitting sounds but I think she was exaggerating a bit when she said that her house was shaking.

    Ideas???

Are you running with spikes on all of your speakers? You want to decouple the bass from the floor as much as possible.

As a teenager, I was running dual 12" subs.

In the afternoons, when I had it blasting(depending on the music itself), the neighboors kept expecting a car to roll by. It's only after a while that they figured out it was me with my window open.

My house was semi-detached and separated by a cinder block wall up to the attic. Despite this, even at very low volumes(like 50-60 dB) the neighboors could clearly hear the bass at night.

Bass just travels all too well. Nothing you can do except turn it down.

    +1 ;)

In all seriousness, I live in a single detatched home with 30 feet between myself and the neighbors on either side. I work in youth ministry and will sometimes have groups of 10 or so teenagers playing XBox 360 games at levels higher than most any adult would be comfortable with. And the games will produce lower frequency bass than most music. I have two 12" subs, and my home was built in 1950 with 2x4 construction (as opposed to 2x6 which is what most newer homes use on the outside walls), and the insulation is crappy. There's even a HUGE sliding glass door in the room, which should let some sound out, I would think. I have been standing outside my house with the front door open (glass storm-door closed, though), near the neighbor's house, and the amount of sound I could hear from my house, bass or otherwise, was negligible at best.

In my opinion, your neighbor with the "shaking house" is either being a little high-maintenance or needs to have her home's foundation checked out. If you want to be super courteous, wait for her to be home, turn your music up, go knock on her door and take a listen for yourself. Heck, don't even tell her the music's up and see if she's even noticed. Is it possible she heard it from outside while taking a walk or parking her car or something, and the power of psycho-acoustics started making her house shake afterward...?

The whole thing seems pretty far-fetched to me...

Crank your stereo and go outside, standing between your house and hers...see if she's telling the truth.

sounds like she is exagerating a bit...

i watch movies on my HT after work..... i crank it up pretty loud....... actually yesterday i put it as loud as i could stand with an Emotiva UPA-7 and my sub maxed out on back and +7 db on prepamp (just to see how loud i could get everything), and my neighbors who's house is only EIGHT feet away said he couldnt hear anything. Both of our houses are pretty small too.

Right, a reasonable neighbor would have asked nicely if you could turn it down before resorting to "my house is shaking." This person sounds like a ****.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

BTW- I wasn't trying to be unhelpful. In fact, as soon as I get out of work, I'll be cranking up some tunes and downing some brews. I'm sure the neighbors will be bobbing their heads along to whatever's coming out of the SDA's.

well my neighbors prefer the teddi to the speedo............next fest Lou and I will be color coordinating our loin cloths for the belly buck contest.

My neighbors now just consider me "eccentric" so I can pretty much do anything and nobody cares. Of course they did meet some of you which explains a few things.

So true...one's choice of freinds often has an influece on the opinion of the neighbors. Based on GA PF 07 I'm sure your neighbors are now VERY leery of the Big Ted clan.

I have had the police called on me. I did not even know they were at the door, nocking with thier flashlight untill a very quiet scene came up. When I answered the door the cops laughed and just said could I turn it down alittle. I have all great neighbors except for the dirt balls to the right of my house. They don't work and are bums. So one day while I was at work I played that song. Get a job you bums you bum ba bum bums, Money dont grow on trees you, well you get it, played it on repeat day. Needless to say they did not like it. The cops said I was not hurting anyone and I was free to play what I wanted at my house. All the while he is trying to keep a strait face. So if it is earlier enough in the day Rock on. Other times so some respect.

    ShackDaddy,

Of course one of them who came thought it was a "Polka Fest". oh boy, now that would be a site, actually, that might be pretty cool.

I could give the OP my camel for a couple weeks, he has been a bit ornry though, he ate some poison ivy and spanish moss and now has gas..........but that would at least take the attention off the music.

I will try the sound test when I get home.

I agree with the over-sensative part - just trying not try annoy them.

I will try to isolate the woffer with some floor spikes or the like.
