The wifey and I just got invited to a birthday party in Manhattan, so, since we are feeling somewhat bored recently, we have decided to attend. We'll only be there from Saturday to Sunday, and we'll be staying in a hotel down near Wall Street.

Anyhooo ... this is my first visit to New York, other than the Garden State Parkway and Tappan Zee Toll Bridge (several times, travelling from D.C. to Wellesley, MA in 2004-5), and I hate hotel breakfasts usually (expensive and mediocre), so are there any decent options in that area other than the usual Starbucks, or should we really take the subway to some other part of Manhattan? Anybody with insider secret info. on the subject for a Hill Billy in the city looking for some cheap thrills?
Alea jacta est!

    Jimmy's coffee shop

    36th & 6th

The 2 of you will pig out and pay less than $20 with tip.

From there you can hit all 9 floors of Macy's and walk around times square.

    Breakfast only?

I can tell a few cool places for Lunch / Dinner.
Do tell! Do tell! We might have time for dinner before the party. We'll probably both be drunk next morning though, since the inviters could drink both of us under the table any day of the week. We only drink very moderate amounts of mostly wine, even if we drink almost every day, whereas the invitation comes from hard liquor and beer drinkers that seem to be able to just throw 'em back endlessly (memories from wobbling back into the Eldorado in Santa Fe on July 4, no actually, July 5, 2008). I forget when we fly out of La Guardia, but we just might have time for lunch too if we start early ... This is beginning to sound like it might be a lot of fun! :D

Good News first. I thought Manhattan was really terrific, and I intend to get right back there as soon as I can. It's just something about the atmosphere of the people and the place that seemed special, and unique to me, especially when compared to boring old L.A. (I hope nobody is offended by that statement, but if they are, they are more than welcome to prove me wrong about this). The party was about a couple of blocks away from both the WTC site and Wall Street (in between, more or less), in a restaurant on Broadway. We had a great trip and were lucky enough to have a hotel just a couple of blocks from the party: it had just opened, so it was just $100 a night for ***, and getting home was not an issue, even in a reduced state of mental awareness.

I was impatient to try out the great list of places to eat, thinking that maybe if I made it up to the sandwich shop I would surely find our own Lasareath right there, before my very eyes!

The bad news is that the party went on until 4.30, and we only got up in time to take our bleary eyes for a walk from the hotel to Battery Park before catching a cab to the airport. I'm sorry I didn't get to try those recommendations, and it even seems a bit rude after all the trouble Polkies took to make such great suggestions, but they won't be lost because, as I said already, I'll be back for sure :D!
