Talk me into vinyl...

I've been sitting on the fence for awhile when it comes to vinyl. I'm only 24, so this whole record thing is a little tough to understand. To be honest, I wouldn't even know how to put a record on...I hang my head in shame, lol.
2 things...
1) Although I usually don't listen to music a whole lot, I've been getting into it lately. First, I had my iPod hooked to the system. I really liked this until I got my XPA-3, now I can hear imperfections in a lot of the music. I regret to say that most of the music on the iPod was ripped using a low quality bit rate (128kbs +), so it sounded ok on headphones, computers, in the car, and on my system at low volumes. I the got the idea that I would start listening in LAME and AAC formats. This made a big difference and I was happy with the sound. I guess the step into vinyl is just the next step forward (or backward depending on when you were born, lol).
2) Everyone I talk to that likes to listen to blues and jazz (my main genre of late) says that vinyl is the way to go. They usually mention something about warmth and "this is the way the music was supposed to sound".
So I leave it to you Club Polk...talk me into vinyl.:D
EDIT: Please mention some moderately price turntables that I might look at. Nothing too expensive, but no junk either. THANKS!

I've been swaying on the same boat as you lately. I'm 22...so I don't really have a lot of experience with vinyl either(though I do know how to put one on:p).
I've been thinking about getting into vinyl though. My parents have a couple boxes of old albums up in their attic that don't ever get any use anymore...I need to dig through them sometime and see what they've got. I have a turntable actually...but it's a really cheap one...and could stand to be upgraded. The nirvana inducer-

You've just talked me into it...lol
Took a lot of arm twisting didn't it?
So...I guess the next question is...what's a good starting point for a turntable? I have one...but it's a cheap Goldstar piece of crap. I think I'd probably do better to upgrade to something nicer.
I'm thinking somewhere in the 300-400ish range. Any suggestions?

Rega P1 or Pro-ject Debut III are excellent starter tables. Both come equiped with very decent cartridges and are setup from the factory. Get a good carbon fiber record brush and invest in some record cleaning supplies. Any record (including brand new) will benefit from a proper cleaning. I used to be a collector way back in the day but sold them all for CD's. Only a year ago did I get back into it. Be careful though this can be a very expensive hobby.SDA-1C (full mods)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to check those out. Do those have built in phono pre-amps? I'd prefer one that did for now.
I think everything about this hobby in general is pretty expensive....lol...Might as well get the most out of it though right?;)The nirvana inducer-

Keiko, thanks for the suggestions.
That Technics looks like a nice table...but that's a bit out of the price range I'd like to spend on it. Ideally I'd like to spend around 300 dollars or less on it. I don't want to invest a ton of money in it initially.
That Audio-Technica looks pretty nice for the money though. I'll definitely be looking into that one when I'm ready to start looking at tables more seriously. 200 is about what I'd prefer to spend initially. I won't be ready to look into one until later this year though...6-7 months or so at least. I've got several other upgrades on the back burner right now that I need to take care of first before I get into a new source.
So using that Audio-Technica for hi-fi I'd be better off with a different cartridge than the stock one? What should I look for as far as cartridges go? Any suggestions.
I like that it has the ability to connect external pre-amps(not sure if thats a standard feature on turntables?). That would let me start off with this table, and upgrade to a nicer pre for it. Then eventually invest in a nicer table, using the external pre I'd already have...yes...I like this idea. I need a turntable now...lol
This hobby costs to much money...:eek:The nirvana inducer-

I looked up both the Denon and the Audio-Technica cartridges you named...both seem to have really good reviews. Prices are reasonable too. Of those two, I think I'd probably end up going with the Denon...it looks like it's pretty nice from the reviews I was reading.
So if I were to buy that Audio-Technica table, do you think I'd be happy with the stock cartridge for a few months or so, until I upgraded? I'm thinking that might be the route I end up going. At 200 bucks for that table, I'd probably be able to get it sooner than I was thinking before too.The nirvana inducer-

Well in that case, maybe I'll just hold off until I can afford to buy both at once. From the sounds of it, I'd be a lot happier with the Denon cartridge...and I'd definitely like to avoid causing more wear on the records if I can help it.
I'll definitely be researching turntable equipment some more though. I've been wanting to get into vinyl a lot lately...I've always loved the warmth that they have. I don't have a lot of listening time in on vinyl to begin with, but I've loved the little bit that I have heard before.
I'm sure I'll change my mind about 40 times before I end up buying anything...but this is definitely going to be one of the top choices.
Dare I ask what a good external pre-amp for it would be? Is that when it starts getting a lot more expensive?...lol
Thanks a lot for the suggestions Keiko, I appreciate it.:)The nirvana inducer-

Well that's something I'll keep in mind when I'm looking for a pre-amp. I'm still working on getting my two channel rig setup, so I'll make sure that it has a phono stage in it. I hadn't even thought of that before.
As far as the pre-amp goes, I'm looking at something along the lines of an Adcom GFP710, which I know does have a phono stage. So I guess I won't have to look into external phono pre's after all. That's good to know...saves me a few extra bucks, which is always a good thing. The nirvana inducer-

Thanks guys, keep the advice. I'm going to a local store to audition some tables, no purchasing yet. Like Curt, I'm sure I'll change my mind about 40 times before I settle on something. His budget is close to mine, so lets keep prices in the 200 - 350 range. I'm not against buy used either, so that's an option.

Not wanting to highjack this at all, but this looks like a good place to ask. Right now I have an older Dual CS5000 TT, I have a modest collection of about 500 albums, that most have been played, once to check for defects and once to dub over to cassette. I would like to do the same to CD, and see many direct to CD/USB turntables out there. Can anyone comment on the audio qualities of any of these? I guess what I'm wondering is if any could replace my Dual for actually having a sit down listening session, or are they at best, just an easy means to transfer to CD with marginal quality?
As I am getting older I now find I have time to just sit and listen to music more and want to start playing my albums more, but also still like the convenience of taking them in the car and sometimes just throw them in the CD player for background music when I'm doing other things.
Thanks for any comments, and again sorry for the thread jack. -

I'm using the Audio-Technica AT-PL50 to convert vinyl to FLAC/WMA and then piping it to my equipment via a wireless laptop with a digital out USB sound card. Very inexpensive solution. Built-in pre-amp that can be turned off if you decide on a better external. The quality is actually not bad at all and buying older albums at $3 is a whole lot cheaper than buying CD's at $6-$8. The AT is certainly not a premium turntable but then again for $80 you're off and running.Sony 60'' SXRD 1080p

One more thing, make sure you get a record clamp for your turntable. That is as important as correctly setting up the tonearm/cartridge.

A record clamp eh? I'll have to look into this as well.

Yep...like I said, it's going to be a slow process...but I'm just going to upgrade as I can. I won't throw myself in the poor house in my pursuit of audio bliss.;)
Now I keep thinking about setting aside some of my other plans to pursue vinyl sooner...but I think I'm going to stick with my plans. Once I get my HT and the 2 channel both setup to where I'm happy with them(for the time being of course:p), then I'll look into the vinyl a little more.
I've still gotta get a power amp for the two channel. I'll be using my Fisher Studio Standard 332 as a temporary pre for it, but a dedicated pre will be soon to follow. Then it's on the a new CDP for the two channel. I've gotta get new speakers for the HT setup too...but hopefully I should have most of that accomplished in the next 3-4 months. Just go out and find a good used table. Lot of stuff out there that can be cleaned up and upgraded. Start with a solid table and arm and put your money in the cartridge. I got this one at the thrift store and after a few hundred bucks for a cartridge and cleaning supplies; she sounds fairly good.>
