I need help on where to place the rear speakers.Where the sofa is against the wall the speakers are "B".to the lerft and right of the sofa the speakers are"A".

Do you put the speakers facing front on the wall the sofa is on"B". or do you have them facing the sofa from the outer walls"A"

I also need to know how high over you head do you put them.

The room is 19 feet wide by 13 feet deep.

Thanks a bunch. John

depends on if your rear speakers are direct or bi/di pole speakers. bi/di pole speaker seem to be more forgiving in their placement. they work well on side or rear walls. mine are on side walls running in bi pole mode. I have never had to move them.

rear speakers should be placed 3ft above your head or higher.

I don't know that I would go 7.1 in a room that short. 5.1, and put your surrounds on the side walls. Those rear speaks are not going to project much valuable output to the viewer on the couch anyway, IMO.

    I agree, stick with 5.1.

+1 on the 5.1 not many movies use 7.1 that I know of unless you go Blu Ray.

No disrespect intended - just wanting to confirm your opinion on this... I've read posts on other forums that getting the surrounds 3 feet or more above the listeners' heads is from an old dolby pro logic guideline that restricted sounds in the surround speakers to ambient and directionless noises. Now that digital 5.1 puts distinct, directional sounds into the surrounds, placing the surrounds at ear-level is said to be more desirable -- dolby's own speaker setup guide at dolby.com shows surrounds for both 5.1 and 7.1 at ear level.

Are these posts correct or should surrounds still be going up high?

5.1 is 5 speakers(fronts/center/surrounds), with the .1 being the subwoofer.

    +1 on the 5.1.

Personally I prefer my surround speakers to be more at ear level. It used to be true that the surrounds were better off being above ear level, but I don't think it's really recommended anymore with the way todays soundtracks are recorded.

Ok sounds good.i guess it is better to have them pointing at your head on the side then facing forward and sending the sound back to the tv.

I guess it depends on your setup. Since my surrounds are only a couple of feet away from the listening position, I would not want them ear level. IMO, they sound best 2' from my head. But if the surrounds were further away, I could see ear level working out. I was unaware they changed their setup guide also.

They will be 5 to 8 feet away from your head.it all depends on where you are sitting or what sofa or chair you are in.i think i might try them two feet above ear hight???what do you think?
