Last Friday morning while trying to drill out some holes in a plastic ring, the bit came out the side and drilled a hole through my finger. It was only an 1/8" bit. Went in just left of center, about 3/4" down from the fingertip. Came out at the cuticle. Just barely broke through on the fingernail side. Hurt like you know what. Didn't have a first aid kit in the pickup, so had to drive 4 miles to the house to get doctored up.

Damn! Hows the finger doing now? I probably would have passed out. Time to get some clamps.

If you post a picture I can tell you what should/should-have been done. You should have gotten a tetanus shot (if not up to date). Started 5-7 day course of antibiotics. Probably a nail bed repair.

Just wrap some electrical tape around it and drive on!

Too small to need a nail bed repair. The ER usually tells people to soak...Don't. Just wash the hand normally with normal soap and water. Don't use hydrogen peroxide or neosporin.
Keeping the wound covered with a bandaid for a couple of days will help speed healing...remove it several times a day so the wound does not get to wet (macerated).
Use the finger as tolerated by pain.

Been there, done that. Didn't hurt as much as the belt sander incident though.

Why is that? My grandfather uses peroxide as a cure-all. :) Maybe I should tell him not to...

Many people still use hydrogen peroxide and it is still useful for many things. But it is not so good for fresh wounds. Peroxide is good at destroying bacteria but it is also harmful to our tissues. Destroying our own tissue provides more food for bacteria. Gentle cleansing and removal of all foreign material as well as removal of all dead tissues is the best approach (so far as we know) to wound care.

There was a little meat on the bit. Or that is what my wife said. She cleaned it up after taking care of me. I am a trim carpenter and have only shoot myself a handful of times. Usually pretty careful. Just wasn't thinking clear that morning.

I would think a belt sander would take a lot of skin.

Thank you very much. I know that I will be able to use that info in the future:o It's kinda funny now that I look back. Any time I "fixed" a hole I noticed that the peroxide seemed to make the hole bigger.

if the hole was just a little bigger you could use it as a rear sight for your weapon.

if nothing else though you can give ben a run for the Polkie most likely to win a Darwin Award.

    careful.

Thought about trying to make it a piercing. Just don't think I could stand sticking something back through there. Thanks for the doctor advice, Hobbyguy. If I have any more trouble, I know who to ask.

Trim carpenter. Small world. You just knock on wood and go on when you get the near misses. At the end of the day you've still got 10 fingers, it's a good day.;)

Every time I nicked or sliced myself it felt like the word BONEHEAD was sky-written for all to see.

Now that's reminding me of a story I just heard about a shop teacher that cut his fingers off demonstrating safety.

Oh, and start carrying a 1st aid kit. I mean, really.

lol. Thats what I do when I'm at work...elec tape and a piece of a paper towel folded up underneath it! Stays on way better than band aids.

I cut myself pretty good at work a few days ago. Wouldnt stay closed so i put a dab of superglue on it, worked like a charm...also probably why im going to die before i hit 50...but then again, i learned from my dad and hes about to be pushing 70.

Did you ever accidentally drill a hole a your finger and then pour Red Devil's turpentine in it? OOOooooo, I hate it when that happens. - SNL

I am lather, so one day at work I drive a 9/16 self tapping wafer screw to the hilt in my wrist.... After waiting about an hour in the emergencey room and then watch a doctor remove the screw with a phillips screwdriver while a nurse waited for the blood fountain, to start I almost passed out.
Funny thing is I didn't bleed hardly anything and doc threw a bandade on it and called it a day.

I can just imagine you almost passed out. I worked with a guy that cut his thumb pretty bad on the table saw. About a week later he was helping some one on the weekend and cut his other thumb. Looked pretty funny with both thumbs bandaged up. Haven't seen him in a while. Hope he still has all his fingers.

Think I will pass on bleach. Might work but I am not going to try it.

OMG that reminds me of a story my Dad told me I HAFTA share.....

He was working at a Stove Factory(1950's)......Guy at the head of the line was in charge of cutting the steel to size.
Boss comes along and see's blood all over the place and the Guys finger wrapped.
The Boss asked "What the hell happened here"?
Guy said......"I got too close and chopped my finger........like this".....yeah He chopped another the same way just to show what happened.
(He had lopped off the whole 1st segment of 2 fingers)

Dad did say the Guy wasn't the sharpest tack in the box! LMAO
