My Onkyo 805 Questions Thread

Obviously individual tastes vary, but I've tried Onkyo and have no plans of ever buying another one. I really don't like the way they sound for music. I find them to be quite sterile sounding, and a bit on the bright side, which when mixed with RT's is a very bad combination.

They work fine for HT usage though. I'm definitely looking forward to moving along to something else though and dumping the 606. The higher end Onkyo's are a bit better, but they still have the same general sound. One of the Pioneer Elites will be my next AVR.

I think my parents are actually going to buy it when I upgrade. Their older Sony AVR crapped out on them a while back...so I'll probably sell them my 606 for cheap when I upgrade.

I haven't heard the Adcom but would easily say the 805 blows the 606 and just about any other Onkyo receiver away in sound quality. I've heard various Onkyo's before and I know how dull they can sound for music. The 805 is really just about as much the opposite as dull as you could get for music. If he's looking for a worthy upgrade in power, then an XPA-2 would be a better option for an amp and he could always use the 805 as a pre-amp and for powering other zones.

Plus, I personally find Onkyo's to be dreadful sounding for music reproduction...too sterile sounding IMO. Since I got my 2 channel system, the Onkyo almost never even gets turned on. I don't think it's even been on for 3 weeks or so.


Jeff-It's basically impossible for us to know if you should change any settings just by looking at the menu's, and not actually being in your individual room with your individual gear.

It must have taken a long **** time to take all those pictures though...lol

Driver.. i also have cs so i would need 3 channel amp which would be xpa 3

can i use xpa 2 for rt 800 and onkyo amp for cs?

I forgot about the center channel. The XPA-3 would be fine then.

Howdie neighbor!:D Did I see you were looking at the XPA-5? Did you want to be able to get the most power to your front sound stage or did you just want to get more power for all of your speakers? It would be up to you if it's worth the extra $250 for two extra channels of power for surround or bi-amp use if you wanted the XPA-5.

actually... i would like xpa 1 for each rti-a9 (front)so it ll get 500 wpc in the future and use xpa 3 for 5.1 channel ht. maybe add upa 2 for 7.1 ... hmmm

dont think 7.1 is important in my case... WAF YOU KNOW?? xpa 3 is on sale and wife would approve. dont think she want to buy it all at once

Well, if you wanted, you could save a crap load of money and get two XPA-2's for each of your fronts and then bridge the power to get 500 watts per channel.;) That would save enough money to get you an XPA-3, all including shipping, for the same price of two XPA-1's.

not bad idea there... i didnt know that u can bridge 2 amps to make it 500 wpc... make sense now..

i think ill get xpa 3 for now until i got $$ and waf approval for 2 xpa -2


i forgot, i may have asked if sub can be powered with emotiva amp for extra power?

Yeah, you can bridge the two channels to make one channel per amp, so you essentially end up with a mono-block amp anyways. It may not be the same quality, but you may not even notice the differences. Look at the weight of a single XPA-2.:eek::D The extra XPA-3 could serve as an amp for your center channel and surrounds too. You could also order just the XPA-3, get it, and connect your front sound stage first. Later, you could order the XPA-2's and just move some cables around.

Well, if you have a subwoofer that is passive and doesn't already have a plate-amp installed, sure. Or if you are willing, you could by-pass the plate amp and connect the subwoofer directly to the amp.
