Ok figured it out. The Onkyo 805 has a HDMI pass through which allows you to listen through you tv speaker and HT speakers.

    Go to the menu
Then go to #7 hardware setup
Next go to # 5 hdmi
Last hdmi audio out set to on.

    Hope this helps

Nope it did not work, my tv still has no sound, I had it set on, HELLLPPPPP Wife neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed Sound!!

Not sure if the last post means you got it or not???? But you probably will need to go into the audio menu on the TV and turn it on and/or turn the TV volume up.

I'm not following this. Curt's reference thread was right on. You connect the HDMI directly to the TV. You then have to tell the TV that HDMI 2 channel audio needs to be decoded in whatever menu your HDTV has as 2 channel digital?

Take the optical from your cable/sat box run it to the Onkyo Toslink in...go into the Onkyo menu for hardware set up (or whatever Onkyo calls it) and tell the Onkyo that TV will be Optical 1 or 2 or 3 or whichever input you have. If everything else is set up appropriately the Onkyo will recognize the Dolby 5.1 in from the box and decode it when TV is selected.

You may also have to tell the box to output through the toslink?

Don't know if this helps. But you need to tell these machines what's connected to them. They are a bit 'dumb'?

How come Onkyo's sound knob is disabled and i tried to turn up (using the knob) no sound at all, i will need to use Panny's tv remote to turn up sound? I thought 805 would take care of sound system and to use knob instead?

You won't be able to turn up the TV's volume with the volume knob on the Onkyo. At least not as far as I know.

If you've programmed the Onkyo remote for your TV you need to select the TV button on the remote which is in the REMOTE MODE panel of the Onkyo remote. Then use the buttons for TV volume at the extreme upper right hand corner of your O. remote which is labeled TV that's where the TV volume control that will work is.

The regular Onkyo Volume buttons will not work with the TV, itself, in that configuration..only those mentioned above.

why not? I thought receiver would control volume or able to use its knob to turn volume? MY HTIB disabled tv and used its knob to adjust the volume.

What about PS3? Will i able to use onkyo volume knob since its hooked to onkyo and tv? If i am watching Blu-ray movies,i cant control volume on onkyo without remote? I dont understand why cant use knob? There must be some setting to enable knob?

actually, my son accident bumped onto onkyo power button, then turned on again, i acutaly can use onkyo knob to control tv sound but there was no sound at all. i can see volume level being adjusted on tv screen it says" Home theater device" when i use panny tv remote and onkyo volume level changes when i press up or down. its weird but it wouldnt display again after i finally got tv sound to work.

anyone got any ideas why ?

That was probably just an on screen display of the Onkyo's volume. IIRC, I can set my 606 to do the same thing.

It's a feature mainly intended for people who have their AVR's placed in a location that's not in the direct line of sight.

Check the A B speaker select buttons. Onkyo puts them near the power button and sometimes when powering off those get pushed also.

So i know my onkyo has 130 WPC going into my two rt 800 at 8ohms as front.
So if i decide to buy xpa-3 with 200 wpc so will amp and onkyo sums up to 330 wpc for L+C+R speakers? or onkyo will disable its wpc and xpa-3 takes over control? i asked because Rti a9 is 500w per channel capacity. if i decide put a9 on hold and to use upa 2 (125 wpc) amp for my rt800 with onkyo 805. if wpc can be sumed with both devices (155 wpc total) will it fry my rt800 since its 250 wpc capcity speaker at 8ohm or onkyo?

    ONKYO 805 Specs
    Front L/R 130 W + 130 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz,
    0.05%, 2 channels driven, FTC)
    150 W + 150 W (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.7%,
    2 channels driven, FTC)
    160 W + 160 W (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.1%,
    2 channels driven, FTC)

    XPA 3 Amp
    8 ohm rating:
    3 channels - 8 ohm = 200 watts per channel

The only power going to the speakers will be coming from the amp. It doesn't add the power from the amp and AVR together.

The amp is connected through the "pre-amp output", which bypasses the power amp section of the AVR, and sends the pre-amp signal directly to the external power amp.

Also, a speaker is more likely to be damaged by being under powered than overpowered. You can have a speaker hooked up to a 500 watt amp, but the vast majority of the time, the speaker won't be drawing any more than 10-15 watts. A speaker will only draw as much power as it needs to run efficiently.

so if i buy xpa-1 (500 wpc) and im wasting money on onkyo 805 amp.. is that what it is? waste of money because avr and amp wont add the power together?

I wouldn't really call it a waste of money in any way...

The 805 is a stellar performer on it's own, it just has the option of adding external amplification. With external amplification the AVR acts as a pre-amp processor.

It would be impossible to combine the power of the two in either case, since that's what a pre-amp output is...a pre-amp output.;)

I guess there is no point in buying upa-2 for my rt800 since its 125 wpc in 8ohms since onkyo has more power in wpc.

The 125 watts from the Emo would blow away the 130 watts from the Onk. Not to mention that the Onkyo isn't actually putting out that 130 watts per channel...it's real world power rating is probably closer to 100-110 with 2 channels driven.

There's a world of difference between an AVR and a dedicated power amp.

For instance, I have an Onkyo 606, which is "rated" at 90 watts per channel, with 2 channels driven. My Adcom GFA-545 is rated at 100 watts per channel. The wattage is basically the same, but there is absolutely no comparison between the two. The Adcom absolutely blows the Onkyo away. That's not due to the extra 10 watts, it's due to it being of a far better design.

wife want me wait on rti a9 and sub, i think she want to buy me for christmas.. I can settle for the 800's til then. i may have $550 on friday since i got my check and i might go for xpa 5 if she approves tomorrow:)

this is why i am asking about amp and avr wpc power.

    Hey Caligula!
Your RT800's will do just fine with the xpa youre looking to buy, if anything it will do just what everyone else has explained it will do...it'll make them SING!

As far as "frying" anything, like curt mentioned above only the xpa (or whatever amp you will be using) will be utilized, and your Onkyo will work as a preamp/processor. If anything, you will simply be helping your receiver out because theres less of a load being drawn from it.

Whatever other speakers you get, the end result is if you run them off an external amplifier such as the one youre looking at, it will sound much better as opposed to the one built into your Onkyo.

Btw I should be dropping off your game tomorrow either before or after going to Chris' :D

The Onkyo 606 and 805 are nowhere near the same receivers. The 805 is one of the best value and best sounding AVR's from Onkyo. The 805, according to this website, can power two speakers at 173 watts at 8 ohms while capable of powering 270 watts at 4 ohms at 1% THD. The 606 can do around 70 or 80 watts at 8 ohms with two channels. That's a big difference. 130 watts is two channel at 0.0348% THD. That is a lot of power for an AVR. It's not all about power either. The 805 has a massive, high-quality power supply, Burr-Brown DAC's, Pure Mode, ect.

I wasn't saying that the 606 and 805 were anything alike...it was a theoretical comparison.

My 606 and my Adcom GFA-545 have roughly the same power output, but the Adcom will absolutely blow the Onkyo out of the water. That's the comparison I was making. Just as the 125 watts of the Emo would blow away the 130 watts of the Onkyo 805.

I'm not sure how you drew those conclusions from my post...

They also used dummy loads for those tests, which isn't exactly true to a real world scenario with actual loud speakers. Real speakers don't have a constant impedance...it fluctuates constantly.

I must have misunderstood your post. I thought you were implying that since the Adcom sounds much better than the 606 does, the 805 would most likely result the same way. I apologize. I'm not thinking clearly at 2AM. I need some sleep.:o

Well...The Adcom would probably blow away the 805 too for that matter. Yes, the 805 has a much better amp section than my 606, but it still isn't going to compare to a good external power amp.

Plus, I personally find Onkyo's to be dreadful sounding for music reproduction...too sterile sounding IMO. Since I got my 2 channel system, the Onkyo almost never even gets turned on. I don't think it's even been on for 3 weeks or so.

Jeff-It's basically impossible for us to know if you should change any settings just by looking at the menu's, and not actually being in your individual room with your individual gear.

It must have taken a long **** time to take all those pictures though...lol

Lol oh man....after seeing just a handful of things available for you to tweak this makes me want to get on the Onkyo bandwagon. Never owned or played with one but I continue to hear good things. Although what type of sound does an Onkyo, lets say 805 or 70x series offer with Polk RT's? I'm a Denon/Pioneer guy and I love the warmth that they have always provided me for HT. :D

Dont mean to hijack the thread, just seeing all these Onkyo owners I had to ask.

Check out this review of it. I cannot think very well this late at night to tell you my thoughts on the sound of the 805.:o If you can get a good deal on an 805, they are well worth it.
