Does the grill on-grill off thing affect bookshelf speakers more

Grills off! Much more bad-**** looking.

Get a Swiffer duster to clean the drivers (works great on the piano black too).
Grills on the Dyns, cat is still alive .

Bing! Bing! Bing! Bing! Give SKsolutions a cigar!

I used to do both. Absolutely cannot hear the difference. Grills off when I want to bad-**** show off. The cat will "screw" with the physical driver ... so will curious young children if the drivers are left exposed. I have a push in on a driver's center to prove.

Both species will more or less ignore if the grill is on. I did once have a cat that decided to check out the scratching post worthiness of a grill... that **** got stopped real fast!

Bottom line: Cats are optional, but you cannot get rid of the kids....

So, day to day: Grills on.

Show off time: Grills off. There is a reason why Polk makes grills removable! :D

On only when kids are in the house (I don't have any yet). My Cantons have aluminum grills so I prefer to have them off, besides they look nicer when the grills are off.

I have to revise my previous post to add the SDAs and agree with Kawizx..above.

SDAs, definitely OFF! Everything else I still leave on...it may be an illusion but the SDAs sound a little more open with the grills off?

I've noticed the same thing on my SDA's. It's probably due to the grille cloth material. It's a lot thicker than on other speakers, such as my RTi8's.

There's an immediate noticeable difference when I remove the grilles on my SDA's...but I can't hear a difference one way or the other with my RTi8's.

A lot of people have replaced their SDA's grille cloth with a more acoustically transparent material. I might end up doing that eventually myself...but it's not a very high priority at the moment.

Hey Guys, which do you prefer on or off?
Is there a big difference in sound?
Off for me, but [and there is a but] it depends on the speaker. Is there a big difference? For probably 95% of folks, there will be no difference.

Only the hardcore pay attention to the sound with the grills off. In my experience, only 1% of the speakers out there make a notable difference with the grills on and that's only because they incorporate the sonic reproduction into the actual design. The Focal 807's would be a good example.

    FOCAL806.jpg

You see the "V" shape on the grill? It helps to deflect the sound based upon the technology of the tweeter design. The end result improves the sound in the sweet spot.

I don't know what speakers you are running but I assumed that my 1.2TL's have a built in feature where the grills come off automatically at a certian volume. I thought this was kind of a neat feature!
