Going to do some shilling for my dad here

Alright, I've talked about my dad's work here before. He does woodworking and when I tell most people that his work compares with the likes of Norm Abrams, they scoff at me. Well, here are some sampling of his work.

This is a pine cradle he built (for dolls or decoration)

il_430xN.54014051.jpg

This is the same cradle but in quarter sawn oak

il_430xN.54012576.jpg

This is a side table made from solid mahogany that is a replica of the side tables one can find on Princess Cruise Lines ships.

il_430xN.54010689.jpg

This is a solid mahogany Shaker style end table

il_430xN.54008316.jpg

All this stuff is for sale and if you want more than what he has, he can duplicate any piece there. He also has other pieces but he wants to see what kind of bites he gets here before he goes further.

You can find his storefront here:

http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6815229

I can attest to the quality of his work and not just because he is my dad. He has built night stands for me, jewelery boxes for my mom, sister and others in the family, an entire bedroom set for my mom, countless bookshelves and such and even picture frames.

He will do custom work and such but as you can see quality work and materials don't necessarily come cheap. But given the work, his prices are fair. so if you see something you like, please, go take a look and contact him or just drop me a line and I will give you a way to get in touch with him.

And by all means, pass this around to others.

Probably. Get some measurements and materials and maybe a picture of what you are looking for and I'll see if he can get me a figure on price.

I don't imaging a fairly simple stand costing a whole lot. He can probably do fancy stuff too like build a compartment in the base to put some weight like lead shot or sand in or something too. That would add a bit of cost though.

I like the Shaker style even if I never have built any. Same with the Federal style. No-nonsense. Both American and as classic as anything that came out of England, when they ruled the world; including fine furniture design.

And I really admire choice mahogany. There's a reason they used it in the finest ships 200 years ago.

That clear finish really accents the beautiful grain. Looks like he's having fun.;)

Looks like he does some really nice work. My dad's also a professional woodworker, he's been doing it for quite a few years now. I don't have any pictures of his work though. He built a cradle that was quite similar to the one you posted too. It was for one of my brothers when he and his wife had their first daughter.

I consider myself a bit of an amateur woodworker too...I don't have a lot of experience, but I've built quite a bit myself. I'm going to be putting together a pair of stands for the Monitor 7's I just got here pretty soon actually.

I need more info than this.

What material do you want them made out of? If you are going to want them slapped together with MDF then you can likely do that yourself and save time and money. My dad can and will make these out of solid wood and finish them to a furniture level of finish.

Depending on the material used the cost will go up or down. I don't have any monitor series speakers to match finishes easily so if you want that, we'll have to find a way to get that.

As far as finishing yourself, why do you want to do that? Finishing materials for something like speaker stands will be fairly inexpensive in the total cost of everything and will not add much on to labor time. you won't save a whole ton of money.

But I need more info from you so I can get you a price. That price will be based on materials needed, labor and insured shipping costs to your location. BTW, PM me with an address so I can estimate shipping costs.

Get me that stuff and I will get you info.

It might have to wait a couple days though 'cause my grandmother's house got broken in to and my parents are busy handling that.

i'll see if i can dig up some plans. Sure there are some around here. and no i wouldnt want MDF. Probably Oak wood or mahogany with just the natural finish. Exactly what does he need? In Marks thread there are 2 .pdf with the spec's/plans...

    Pauly and John,

I am serious too about having a pair of M7 stands built. I would like the wood to be dark as the vinyl on the monitors is dark. or even oak I guess. but the stands have to be a certain height and have a 3 degree tilt back on them if I recall. Plus some kind of lip on the back of the speaker base to keep them from sliding off.

did anyone find the blue prints for the original stands?

lets keep this going and see if we can make it happen. I've been looking for a pair of stands for years. I'm no work worker or claim to be one. I leave that up to the professionals. ;)

I might have enough, I'll talk to my dad.

If more people want this, we'll make up some templates with like MDF and I resin them so they don't get destroyed. Then he can kick out kits pretty quick in whatever wood people want. Might help reduce costs.

The degreed angle shouldn't be a big deal, nor should a lip.

The finish will be more dependent on the type of wood used. So if you can get me high quality pictures of the speakers with the color you are trying to match, we can likely cook up a stain that will fit your needs.

Also, if I can work with the designs we have now, I'll switch it up a bit and see if we can make a design that will allow the bases to be filled with some sort of weighting or sound deadener. Also, floor spikes could be added, of course adding the cost of the spikes. Gimmie a day or two to talk with my dad about it. As I said, my grandmother had a break in and that's the priority right now. I should have better info by this weekend. If anybody else is interested, post up. I'll see if my dad can give me estimates of cheaper wood options like pine along with the mahogany, walnut, ash, oak, cherry and maple that most people would be interested in.

I'm guessing the cost wouldn't be to bad... I imagine it would be like shipping a heavy beefy amp.. that weighed 50 or 60 lbs. Guess it all comes down to the thickness of wood used and overall weight of the final stand.

oh yeah. i've shipped plenty of stereo gear as well as speakers... the bigger the box yeah the more $$$. Lets just say I'm prepared to figure that into the cost.

monitor 7's like the ones I have would greatly benefit from proper stands with the correct height and tilt angle. :)

    This is actually very exciting.
