I fried my Peerless 810665 tweets. Should I hang myself?

Well? What would be my best option? I had the Monitor 10A's and I clipped my amp.

I know you guys are the ****. You will think of something.

Are you sure you didn't just blow the fuses that protect them?

I certainly hope so. How do I check? I was running a new Onkyo TX-8555 to them and I turned it up to full but it wasn't maxing the mids or the 10 so I thought I was okay for a sec but then it got all muddy. The mids and woofer sound perfect still. Again, how do I check?

    Thanks,

On the back of the speakers, where you connect the cables, there should be a fuse block. I'm using 10As for HT and mine have Peerless with fuse blocks.

Okay yeah I was wondering what those were. They looked empty, so I didn't see their purpose. I looked at them super-closely now in the light. Are they supposed to have just one really thin wire going through? They almost don't look like a fuse that I am used to seeing to be honest. This is my first set of component speakers btw.
    Thanks
    waldo

p.s. and it appears they are blown, if that is in fact a tiny wire going through lol.

    whew!

so would a regular store have something like this?

Sounds like you blew the fuses, let me check to see what amp fuse is recommended.

Mine have 5 amp fuses in them, not sure if that's what came in them or not though.

Yep. Mine may have just been replaced with a more tolerant fuse at some point. I don't really ever play them at very loud volumes so I'm not too worried about hurting mine. You may want to try a 2 amp. Radio Shack will have what you need, maybe even an auto parts store or Wal-Mart.

If the wire isn't solid or the glass is smoky, they are shot.

    Radio Shack, auto parts store

Here's an idea...pull the fuses and then take a piece of wire and jumper the fuse holder and then listen for sound coming out of the tweeter.

It is most definitely the fuse. The wire makes the tweeter play. I don't really want to turn it up like that though. Is there any safe way to play it like this until tomorrow when I buy fuses?
Of course not turn it up too loud. Thoughts on safely doing it?

:D Yes probably not the wisest idea. I can't stand the 10's with no highs though. I might as well be gouging my eyes out with a screwdriver or swallowing glass shards.

Listening with the jumpers on won't be a problem, just don't get carried away with the volume. When choosing fuses be sure to get fast blow fuses, not slow blow fuses.

Get a 5 pack of the one amps, and don't go higher. If you have blown them going higher will put them at risk.
    Enjoy.

Okay, compiling all your advice, I will be buying a pack of the 1A fast blow fuses, and watching the volume, heheheh. @michaeljhsda2 what is this deoxit? Is that why your fuse holder looks new any mine doesn't?

Awesome I will look into the Deoxit.

Now if I buy an external amplifier, like the Emotiva XPA-2 (click), this will be giving my speakers more, cleaner watts. Will I be able to get it louder without burning the fuse since there will be no clipping at higher volumes? I'm not trying to push it to the limit, but I was just curious.

EDIT: I am trying to push it to the limit :D

Well actually I was thinking how the Onkyo TX-8555 is 100wpc and according to lore, that makes it probably around 70 real rms watts, and if it sounds this good like this it would be pretty hard to imagine the amazing SQ of 250 pure audiophile rms real watts going into these beauties. Of course I am way behind you guys on listening experience, since this is my first component setup. I am happy with it though, and it is mostly thanks to this forum in leading me to it. I would have never suggested the 10's to myself in a million years. What a treasure to find.

I wouldn't do that for monitor 10's. You should look into an older Adcom GFA-545, or a parrasound. You don't need to spend more than $200 IMHO. Watts are not watts.
    Enjoy

You are a guru and so I will try to take your advice, but are you saying that the Emotiva is not a good amplifier? I would like to put the full rms watts into the 10's of course. I guess I was just wondering what you meant by watts are not watts. It is easy to be sucked in by flashy imagery on a website. However, the Emotiva looks like a decent amp to me.

Damn these 10's are engulfing me with this electronic music. mmm hmmm.

    -waldo

I'm looking for the Adcom GFA-545 right now.

Actually there are a lot of guys here with much more experience with different amps, but the Adcom is tried and true. The EMO looks great on paper, but it hasn't been around a long time. I have heard a few EMO amps, and I was pleasently surprised, but the price of that amp is too high for the same/better SQ in a used Adcom, or Parasound HCA-xxxx.
    This place is normally good.

Nothing is jumping out at me right now. If you can find one local even better. Check craigs list too. Save the extra money from the amp, get some tweeters, and do the cap/resitor upgrade;)
