The best was the 60gb original version. They'll be almost impossible to find new. Of the newer ones, just go with the one that has the hard drive that suits your needs.

Yeah, the 60GB has more the most features- card reader, more usb ports (i think), hardware based backward ps2 compatibility, and plays SACDs. Not sure how well they hold up over time compared to the newer models though, that has yet to be seen.
The newer ones are more power efficient, quieter, and don't heat up as much though. That's never really been a problem anyway, but I'm just noting that both have some advantages. 60GB still clearly wins out IMO though. :D

Yes, the 60GB had the most features. But it was the launch console in November 2006 along with the much less produced 20GB. So unless you're shopping on ebay, etc. you won't be able to find one at Target...no problem with reliability compared to console averages.

After those units, you get declining compatibility with ps2 games with the 80GB released in 2007 IIRC. Then the 40GB and all hard drive sizes released at the end of 2008 to the present (including the 80GBs) will no longer play ps2 games or SACD.

Other core functionality is the same, though, including blu-ray playback, across all the versions. So unless you absolutely have to have near 100% ps2 compatibility or SACD, searching for a 60GB might be a waste of time. If you do get a new one, get the cheapest one you can regardless of hard drive size. Don't pay attention to Sony marketing bundles that try to get you to buy a bigger hard drive package. Then get a cheap 160GB or greater generic SATA laptop drive that installs with a screw driver if you need the extra space. Search youtube for many how-to videos on how easy it is. My 60GB is now a 200GB and is still going strong since early 2007.

60GBs used to be really high priced, but now they go for a little over 400 on ebay not hard to find at all. If I had the cash I'd pick one up and put my other one in the bedroom... Also- there is one difference in the latest models of 80GB, they don't have the card reader that the old one used to

I suppose this feature may be convenient for some, but there are so many other ways of getting content into the ps3 if you are using it as a media hub from streaming content from your pc to usb thumb drives and external hard drives...

Supposedly the BR laser portion was a cheap version and goes out. There is some rumble from PS3 60GB owners wanting a recall but there's not enough of us complaining or perhaps not enough of that particular model's BR laser croaking. Maybe a majority sent their unit in before the warranty expired. Others have resorted to purchasing replacement units on ebay and attempting to do the surgery themselves instead of forking over $150 to Sony. Difficult to determine as there's not that much info out there compared to the 360's RRoD.

Ive got an original 60, but got it near the end of the cycle. Haven't had a problem one with it.

I had 2 360's crap out on me in a month and took the second one back to BB for a PS3. With blu-ray and the new Sony LCD, I think I made the right choice.

The thing is- I actually have an 80GB that failed on me for BR... DVDs worked fine and everything just BRs stopped reading correctly. I sent myine in and they fixed it pretty quickly though. Of all my friends I'm the only one that has had this happen with the 80gb, and I dont' know anyone with the 60, so I don't really know what problems that has... could be that the 60 and 80 share the same laser assembly and I just got unlucky though...

I have loved PS3 since they came out, and still love them now. I have lost a little bit of faith lately though with 2 of my 3 PS3's dying on me. Both my sons' PS3's died within 2 weeks of each other, both were older model 60's. I sent one in for repair, since it was out of warranty, and the other is just waiting toi get sent back in when I feel like shelling out another $170ish to get the other one fixed. I have an 80GB and (knocks on wood) have had no problems on it. I got scared the other day though when I went to watch a Blu-Ray and it said I couldn't read it!! I almost crapped my pants, luckily though it was just dirty and once cleaned worked fine.

HAd my 60G near end of production and have had no problems with it, same for my X360 but they both are used for Audio and Video media only no games.

They may last longer as media extenders and media players than gaming consoles.

my 60 gb never gave me any trouble because I took good care of my ps3. i dust clean three times a week and polish it with micro fiber towels. I clean fans with Q tip sametime.

Well said Caligula, that is exactly why my sons' playstation's broke, they used the hell out of them and didn't take care of them. I on the other hand baby my 80GB and have had it almost as long as they have had their 60's and it still working like a champ (knocks on wood)

This sums it up pretty much, the only thing you'll be missing from the newer PS3's is SACD and BC. But i could personally care less about BC, i have no desire to play PS2 games when i could play PS3 games. But in all honestly i use my XBOX 360 for video games because i like it much better, my PS3 is used for blu-ray movies and music.

Nope, none that i'm aware of anyways. I've had my 40g for about a year with no issues at all.
Decent price you got there by the way (if it's in good condition), especially considering you got some games with it.

I opened up my ps3 because it's out of warranty anyway. The B-R drive was spotless. The rest of the unit had very little dust. I mean there really wasn't anything to clean. To test it again, I ran 10 blu-rays through it: Resident Evil, 28 days later, 28 weeks later, Swordfish, The Hunt for Red October, Wanted, Wall*E, Underword, Underworld Revolution, and X-men the Last Stand. Only X-Men played and I let it play over and over again so I don't think this is a laser problem. When I inserted the next disk - nothing. No problems at all with DVD's.

BR disk recognition problem? Perhaps a HDCP handshake problem? I just dunno. Latest patch installed but no luck.
