Is this a good deal for a pair of RTA 11Ts?

Hello folks,

I am looking to start assembling a two channel set-up comprised of some vintage Polk speakers and tube amp and preamp. I have come across a pair of RTA 11T Polks here locally for $250/pr. The speakers are in fine operating condition, but have a few scratches on the cabinent (see attached photo). Is this a good deal for these speakers or would I be better of passing on these? I would eventualy like a set of SDAs for the setup, but wouldn't mind having something to get me by until I can find a pair of those. Thanks in advnce for the advice.

Thanks!. Yeah that's what I was thinking about offering him. That seems fair to me. I've done a search on these speakers and have seen mixed reviews on these. What do you all think of them and how would you compare their sound to some of today's Polk speakers like the RTi series or the LSis? Thanks in advance.

I've owned a couple pairs,, the bass and mids are very good for their size,, placement will result in some pretty good imaging, you may want to consider the rdo tweeter replacement at some point. Now,, if you put some tubes in the mix, with a good source, you will have a very respectable 2ch system. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on these. I'm definitely going for a vintage/tube/warm sound with the setup. I'll keep y'all posted as I add to the system and get it tweeked.

I have a pair and LOVE them. I own 4's, 5's, 7's, and 2.3TL. I consider the 11T the best bang for the buck of all.

I paid 200 on a minty pair local and they have great bass, imaging, clarity and are sexy with the tops off. Sure you can get those for 200 easy.

Compared to RTis, I like the RTAs better...much more laid back, similar to SDAs w/o SDA. Compared to LSis, it's a toss up...probably go with LSis.

Just to let you know there is a pair on ebay, the auction ends in approx. 2 1/2 days. nobody has bid on these as of now and the starting bid is 100 bucks with shipping in at 102 bucks. they are eggshell color and appear to be in nice condition, but they have no grills. its worth a look you might like or dislike the color.
Most of them only hear how loud it sounds, and the rest of us hear everything else -

I also picked up a pair of these RTA11T and im having trouble with them. Getting nothing out of the tweeters and what sound im getting out of the rest is terrible. Not my amp as i hook up a pair of pioneer hpm 40s and they are fine. Are there still replacement parts for these models? Any help appreciated, this is my first post on polk. Thanks-Phil

sounds like several of the tweeters and drivers are toast in your speakers. something isn't right.. you'll have to do some more investigating to find out what the problem is. push the speaker and see if it sound scratch when you push it in. Not sure if that model had fuses on the back or not.. I don't think they do... but IF they do.. check the fuses.

No, the RTA11T's didn't have fuses.

You might want to check for airleaks too...that wouldn't really be affecting the tweeters, but it could definitely be affecting the mid-woofers. Push in and hold both of the passive radiators, the two mid-woofers should both come out, and stay out for a few seconds, and then start moving back in really slowly. If they move back in quickly, then you have some airleaks, which would definitely affect the sound quality.

    Are both speakers doing this?

You might also check the crossovers. Mine seemed ok for 17 years then one of the tweeters stopped working. I found a few bad solder connections on the crossover.

I'd bet it's in the wiring or banana posts. You have a multi-meter?
Pull the crossover panel off the back (gently) and have a look inside.
