At $1700 the mps is a bit pricey...

he can get three xpa-3's for that price.... he can always buy another amp later for the rears... it seems like hes a bet skeptical about an amp right now.... for $499 the xpa-3 is a no brainer.

I think you'll find that you want to buy as much clean power as you can afford. You might be able to get away with running them on a receiver, but you will never realize the speakers' full potential unless you hook them up to a good amp.

are you running 7 lsi speakers? If so, that would be entirely up to you. I think you can always upgrade later... in my personal opinion, you are going to want more than 125wpc on your fronts. I'm running 200wpc (375 at 4 ohms) and I would like more. Will the upa be better than your receiver? yes. Will it be better than the xpa, no. It all depends on what you want to spend. Do you do music more than movies? I found myself owning a 7 channel 200 wpc amp that I paid quite a bit for, and I have only used more than 2 of its channels for about a week. I now use channels 1 and 7 to power my LSi25's.

I think that your receiver will work right now for the rear channels, as they do little work for the most part... if anything, buy the xpa-3 so that you can prove to yourself that you need separate amplification

    or you can buy 2 xpa-1's and I'll trade you my B&K 7270 Series II 200wpc (375 at 4ohm) over 7 channels :)

Personally I'd look into a used Adcom 545 or 555. Both are around 200 wpc, and can be had used for about 200-300 dollars. That's just a two channel amp, but would be great for your mains. You could always add another 3 or 5 channel amp sometime down the road too, to power your center and surrounds.

    What is your budget?

and how many channels do you need, 5, 7?

I take it from the amps you are looking at, you need 5 channels. Its too bad emo is out of stock on their xpa-5, $800 for 200wpc is a good value.

Its really up to you at this point... there are a hell of a lot of amps that will drive those speakers, the adcom or the rotel will definitely be better than your receiver. Look at audiogon, I'm sure you will find a lot of good amplifiers there.

    ah...
just to let you know, the placement on those lsi's is less than desirable... also, you can cut the back out of that cabinet... you certainly don't want to contain an amplifier... mine gets hot enough to fry eggs....and its completely in the open.

yes, well as you can see my apartment doesnt give me many options for placement...plus do you crank your amp?..id be listening at moderate volumes..and i dont want to cut out the back...the whole reason for replacing my setup with this stand is to have a cleaner look and not see all the wires

Even with your Denon AVR (a better than average unit by the way), your LSi25's wll sound better than most other 8 ohm speakers. Your priorites regarding saving for a house vs more audio equipment is more sound, no pun intended.

Remember this is an audio forum filled with a few, perhaps many well-meaning fanatics. To them if you don't drive your LSi's with an external amp with at least 200 wpc, well that is like breaking all the ten commandments of what you should do. You might end up in audio hell perhaps.

Some don't have to worry about saving for a down payment, a mortgage, or being on a budget. Since you live in an apartment and can't really crank up your system, I think that saving your money for the down payment is wise. Wait until you get into your house to buy an amp. There is less to move that way.

So don't feel you need to go out right away and get an external amp, even though a great deal on the XPA-3 runs out in the next week or so. ;) Good luck.

Look at it this way, too....whatever you'd spend on a good used or new amp now will likely be more later on anyway with inflation. So by then, you'd be all set and you know you won't suddenly not want to watch movies at home.

I occasionally crank my system, but remember I'm only using two of the 7 available channels. I'm not really pushing my amp. Certain amps just tend to get hot, they never recommend that you enclose them that tightly.

At this point, its about opportunity cost for you... and that is entirely up to you. Will you get better sound out of an external amp, yes. is it necessary, no. At least not at the levels you are talking.

I think you're at the point that you have most the information you need, now you need to make the decision on your own.

I live in an apartment too right now, and I just had my first noise complaint. I can listen to my speakers at a fair level without getting complaints, and at that level, I feel, I have much better sound than with a receiver.

Like i said before, if you wanna give it a try, get the emo xpa-3 at $500 and if you don't think the improvement was worth it, sell it at audiogon... or something. You will likely find a buyer for close to what you paid.

^^^ya, im at that point...im in talks with a couple of sellers for their rotel 1075 but only going to pull the trigger if i can grab them for under $600, which is looking hopefull...and with the stand i can put the amp off to the side of the right side of the tv behind it

now someone mentioned my speakers weren't ideally placed but tell me why, i have them in triangle form to my listening position and placed ahead of my tv
