I'm speaking out of my hat here. But since there used to be no anti-virus software for macs, and Macs now share Intel chip architecture that was designed for PCs and can actually run Windows?

Could we venture to say that this 'change' may have something to do with the birth of Mac viruses and protection for it?

Totally curious. Waiting for the computer GURU on this one.

nothing to do with the chip architecture, only the operating systems and size of the installed user base. No one will write a virus that only affects 1% of PC's. Now that Mac is gaining market share and touting its OS as "safe" is the reason we're seeing them get hit.

    CNH,
If you run a windows partition on your mac you're still susceptible to all the virus that would normally attack a PC but those viruses won't cross over and mess with your OS X partition.
