Convenience = compromise in sound~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -
receivers are one step above Bose...................that;s not saying a lot!"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. I don't really disagree with all of this receiver bashing, but in fairness there've been a couple of halfway decent receivers put out over the years...

Wow Just curious what does your high-end multi channel rig consist of now?
Snow -right now Im between systems. All that I have left from my two-channel (all Hyperion) rig is a Sony DVP-7700 ES and a Musical Fidelity TriVista DAC. The 7700 is an excellent transport; the TriVista is a great DAC. Im going to put them up for sale on Audiogon and throw in an Omega Micro digital interconnect (DBS) if I get my asking price.
My remaining surround system is a hodge-podge of leftovers. I have two receivers; the flagship Yamaha from 1999, the RX-V2095 and the Harman Kardon DPR-1005 from 2005. The 2095 has a very nice amp section. The HK is a digital amp that sounds very thin. Sometimes I use the HK as a prepro to drive the 2095.
I use the six analog outs from a Sony multichannel SACD player (cant remember the model number sitting here at work) to drive either the HK or the 2095. Speakers are NHT Super Twos and Super Threes all around. Subwoofer is a Polk. Going forward, Im waiting to see the many new prepros that should be coming to market in the next few months; Bel Canto, Bryston, Parasound, etc.
For the enjoyment of upgrading crossovers and refinishing cabinets, Im going to go for now with five Monitor 10s for the speakers. Im thinking of driving the 10s (each) with a Dynakit MkIII. I think the IIIs would be a good match as the 10s have reasonable sensitivity. Im sure other Polkies will chime in on that.;)
My goal for 2010 is to build five of these (http://htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=29605). Over the holidays I started finishing the basement to make it into an audio video room. Im going to build-in an infinite baffle subwoofer as part of that process.
Whew; a lot of work ahead of me.:D

Whoops; that's Harman Kardon DPR-2005, not 1005.
