What do you guys think about when listening?

What kind of mind are you in when you sit down to seriously enjoy your music? I think the proper mental state can be even more important than the gear when trying to find maximum enjoyment in your music.

When I listen to music I imagine myself on stage with the musicians. Its simple but it adds so much more enjoyment. If I really allow myself to let go and enjoy the music, I can see the entire stage and crowd around me.

What do you do?

I listen to music to relax my mind and not have to think about anything. Once I'm not thinking about anything I can then let my mind go to its happy place. I'd tell you about that, but then I'd have to kill you

I listen to a large variety of music. Sometimes I day dream that I'm singing the song (not sure why) or just thinking about situations in my life. Usually music helps me study, or helps me get through stressful times. The rest of the time I just sit back and enjoy the music.

It depends on where or how I first heard what I am listening to. If it is a blast from the past, it takes me back to how my life was at the time I collected the album/disc. Friends, wives, girlfriends, good times, etc. come to mind.

If it happens to be really involving/difficult passages in good jazz or a classical piece, I imagine the artistry, skill, years of practice, or God's gift it takes to play that well.

I usually just like to kick back, rest my head against something and close my eyes. Just get lost in the music. I always try to feel as if I'm actually inside the music, if that makes sense. Not so much performing it...but actually inside of it. Not that music is really something you can be inside of...lol...but I'm sure you know what I'm saying. I just let it envelop me, and take me away to wherever it's going to take me.

Music is like a journey to me. I've always been an entire album person, I can't stand when someone puts on a CD and skips through 3/4 of it. Albums are recorded as that...albums. I'm of the mind that most of them should be listened to in their entirety to really get the most out of it.

I try to focus and zero in on each and every instrument playing. As I listen to each instrument I visualize it being played in front of me and at the same time I try and analyze how well my system is doing in re-creating the overall soundstage.

Part of my enjoyment of audio is the ongoing and relentless pursuit of tweaking my system to get the most out of it. I enjoy it most when a relatively small change; even something trivial like speaker placement; can yield increased sonic enjoyment.

The upside is that I am 100% thinking about audio. Not work; or much less anything else to do with the real world. It’s a great escape and one I really enjoy; more so since creating a dedicated listening room exclusively for vinyl.

I'm all over the place. I have to let go first and not "demo" my system every time I listen to it. I have a real serious problem with that. If anything doesn't sound "right" to me, then I'm forever tweaking and never get to "listen" to the music.

Other times I can pick out something I'm in the mood to hear depending on the mood I'm in. I also do not like to be disturbed. I like to be all by myself. So lets say I'm aliitle depressed about life and I just need to get away. I will put some Lorenna Mckinnett in and listen to her story. Listen to her amazing voice and let her take me somewhere else. Dave mathews I enjoy listening to when I want a different kind of experience. His music is story telling and some points but I enjoy the technical sound of there band, I'm a musician and can really appreciate it.

So it really depends on my mood and why I'm sitting down. honestly I demo more then listen.

Aw man, you don't want to ask me that. I have been referred to as "anal".

If I get into it, all of you will be critically analyzing every aspect of everything down to every minute detail. I have been told before many times that "I wish you would just sit back and enjoy the music". Well, I do but.............I'll leave it at that.

Just enjoy the music and think about **** or something.......:D  :D

I just get into every aspect of the music. If I find myself not being able to focus my mind on the music at times, I'll flip through an audio magazine. That usually brings me to the right place to focus on the music.

Haha, I always have my Crutchfield magazine within arms reach. For some reason I feel more focused when I'm looking at that and listening at the same time. Who knows? Just one of those little things I guess.

 Sigmund Freud is calling your name!

Once I get past critiquing the technical sound of the system, I usually let my self get lost in a musical trance. Sometime I am there live at a concert sometime just somewhere else.

    1. I wonder if Jesse's hair is a new element.

    2. I contemplate if the odds of a piece of bread falling with the buttered side down is directional poportional to the cost of the carpet.

    3. I dream of splitting coconuts with TLW on a deserted caribbean island.

    4. I see Cathy slowly mouthing the words Tubes Rule as Doro dances in A-less chaps whipping his self.

    5. I hear a howl, I see the moon is full and catch a glimpse of Brett bounding into the woods.

    6. I watch as Norah and Diana argue over who will give me my next chocalate covered strawberry.

Well there is more but its bannable stuff.

Ditto. Two roads for me. Either I end up with "Clear the mechanism" like Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner, "For Love of the Game") and only hear music or I'm in the log cabin out in the woods in Dreamcatcher.
