Glad I was not on this flight!

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A US Airways plane has crashed into the Hudson River.

A U.S. Airways airplane has crashed into the Hudson River, CBS 2 has learned. The plane appears to be in one piece and passengers are being evaucated by rescue teams.

Officials tell CBS 2 the airplane is Flight 1549, an Airbus a320 that took off from La Guardia Aiport and headed to Charlotte, N.C. There are reports that there were about 60 people on board. The plane seats about 120 passengers. It went down around 3:30 p.m.

There are reports that the a bird strike may have caused the plane to go down, meaning a bird may have entered the engine, causing a malfunction. A large flock of geese was said to have flown in front of the plane at the time of the bird strike.

The bird strike disabled both engines.

The flight was in air for about six minutes before it went down, at a maximum altitude of 3,200 feet.

I hope there weren't any casualties. That must have been weird to see.

It looks like it is staying upright on the water which I would guess is a good thing.

A lot of differing reports for the moment, but it seems as though the flight was almost full, not just 60 people, as initially stated. That might change. The first photo in that local CBS station article is pretty scary if you blow it up: people seem to be standing knee deep to almost waist deep in the water, which is estimated at 40°F, on top of the wing of the aircraft (outside temperature about 20°F).

It does seem as though everyone survived without serious injury, and that there was not too much panic. They are being treated for shock and hypothermia. There was speculation that the pilot was trying to make it to a nearby airfield but could not keep the aircraft in the air. We'll hear a lot more about this as the fuzzy details get cleared up.

It's just great to see such a positive outcome, thus far, of a possibly terrible situation.

Saw this on the news a little bit ago. Thank god everyone's alright, and there weren't any serious injuries or deaths.

That's what those pilots get paid for though...they managed to keep the plane level while landing on the water...that takes some skill I'd imagine.

I'm glad everyone is safe! I mean can you imagine being on the plane??

I ad a small scare last year. My wife, 2 kids and I took off from Philly on our way to Disney. When they were pulling the landing gear up it sounded awful and loud. We all said well that didn't quite sound right-but dismissed it when nothing was said about it.
About 45 minutes into the flight the pilot said that we were actually just circling around the philly area the whole time and that we were going back for an emergency landing. We had a hydraulic problem with the landing gear. I'm thinking WTF?:eek: Anyway it turned out that the landing gear were actually stuck in the take-off/landing position so we would be safe to land. Phew.
We were greeted to a standard emergency landing group of crash trucks and what not.
We were safe-it's all that really mattered. Better safe than sorry. Of course its not easy taking those kids anywhere not to mention a couple hour trip on a plane for the first time, but to have to do it twice? :(
IIRC within the hour  we were on another plane and taking off again. Obviously this delayed us so we really missed out on most of the day at the parks.

Now about the Hudson crash, when's the movie coming out?

And do what with the plane?
If I read the news correctly, after the pilot reported to the control tower that they had a double bird strike, the plane was diverted to another airport for an emergency landing but both engines cutout before that was possible.

No kidding? Did you see what I quoted? I was refering to the miracle comment. Wouldn't the miracle have been better if the plane had made it to the other airport? Or better yet, never hit the birds in the first place.

Pilot = steely eyed missle man. I can't even decide where to go for lunch in under 3 minutes and this guy has to determine what happened, what's damaged, what's left that's still flyable, where to go, when to abort, tell the passengers to brace for impact, calculate the angle of attack into the Hudson, etc.

Pilots, crew, rescuers all deserve a standing ovation.

    Fantastic.

and after all that, calmly stroll up and down the aisle a couple of times as she sinks into the murky abyss to make sure everyone is off.

The way the airlines are these days they will just dry it off, and put it back in service. Maybe charge extra to fly on it, since the odds of the same plane crashing twice are pretty low.
