Which POLK subwoofers (PSW series) is punchy subwoofer?

I am looking for punchy subwoofer made by polk. Micropro Sub is nice but is it worth shelling $$ to have punchy sub?
The sub is for 90% HT,5% Gaming, 5% music. Is DSW 125 or 1000 good "punchy" sub? I like how it look in cherry finish :D

Please tell us your experience with these subwoofers?

Im doing some homework
I am 100% BORN DEAF and No I am not kidding! :D Why am I here? My wife's hearing! :p

What exactly do you mean by punch? It is a very good all around sub for starters, and much better than the sub I used to have, but it doesn't push me back in my seat or overpressurize my room, lol. I have heard good things about the MicroPro line, but have not heard one for myself. Most popular subs here seem to be SVS, Velodyne and the higher end subs like that.

Do some searching and reading around here. There are many views and opinions and reviews on subs. It all depends on what you want. Ive had a few PSW subs (Even 2 stacked) which i found great for music but did not quite have the Low i was missing on movies. I see 90% will be used for HT. Welcome to CP and get your read on.

of course im searching and reading around here but the posts are not suitable to my "Need" due to deaf. most of them are talking about low volume on subs.

I want vibrations coming from sub. My HTIB HTSS2000 sub does punch good but not enough because i have to crank it up, the speakers get too loud for my wife, i can feel it when cranked high..

Sounds kinda backwards to me. 90% HT i would want the BOOM. Music i would want the Punch. Search HSU, SVS, Velodyne. Good affordable well rounded subs. IMO.

Why don't you said earlier that you are hearing impaired and wanted to have body shaking bass so people can give you better suggestions. Since you can only feel and not hear the bass notes, the Polk DSW or PSW will not work for you since you need to feel vibrations. For that, you need to go for the top of the line subs that can go lower than 20Hz effortlessly.

The order below doesn't constitute any kind of quality preferences or the recommendations. The order of numbering is just for the sake to make a list.

If you want to have some nice furniture quality subs like Polk PSW series, Velodyne, SVS, HSU, AV123, JL and Rythmik offers various colors and / or piano gloss finishes.

    1. Some top of the line Velodyne subs (DD series)
    2. SVS PB13 Ultra in 15Hz Mode. (ID : Internet Direct Company)
    3. Epik Tower or Castle (ID)
    4. A Pair of HSU Research ULS-15 (ID)
    5. Danley's DTS-20
    6. Edesign (ED) A7s-450 or the A7-900 or the new A7-450 (ID)
    7. A Pair of AV123 MFW-15
    8. JL Audio Fanthom Series F113 or F212 or the Gotham Series G-213
    9. Seaton's Sound (aka Mark Seaton's) Submersive
    10. A Pair of Rythmik Audio (sold through Ascend Acoustics) 15" Direct Servo Subs

Or you can pay me about 100G to get your specially design custom crafted sub to suit your needs to feel vibrations.

You'd probably do best to look outside of Polk. The PSW series probably isn't going to fulfill your needs. The DSW MicroPros might be able to. As others have said though, I'd look more towards SVS, Velodyne, HSU...something like that.

Honestly it will be nearly impossible to have a system that will be loud enough for you if you are nearly deaf but not annoyingly loud to your wife. One of the best "presence" subs that I've heard that doesn't blow ear drums at the same time was a 15" Velodyne DLS-5000R. Good luck.

Well "punchy" usually means lots of air moved in the upper bass region. Think of it this way- next time you go to a rock concert, notice the quality of the kick drum played through the PA system- that's punchy. It isn't ground rumbling bass, but "kick in the chest" bass.

That being said, I think you're looking for looking for "shake the walls" bass - especially for a theater setup, so look for a sub that can play loud and low. All our current home subwoofers are CEA-2010 spec'd (loud and low)- meaning you can easily compare the performance of different subs across the line. Look for one that can put out the greatest # of dB in the "Ultra Low" range. DSW MicroPRO (especially the larger ones) play the lowest and will give you the most low end rumble.
You should also consider using more than one subwoofer- but the same model.

NOW I understand. You can't hear anything but you want to "feel" the big action scenes in the movies. Am I correct? If so, you should definitly find the biggest baddest sub you can and build it into your home theater watching chair so that the chair rumbles on the big action. An interesting point (maybe)... about 15 years ago I dated a deaf girl. I had a fantastic sound setup in my car at the time and when I played the music really loud the vibrations from the subwoofer kind of freaked her out. She said it felt weird. She had never danced before for obviious reasons but I took her to a dance where they had really big speakers and got right up close to them. She could feel the beat through the big speakers and we had a great time and she danced for the first time in her life. I damn near was deaf by the end of the night but it was a blast.

Keep in mind that you don't have to go with a new sub to get what you are looking for. There are many used high end subs that will shake your walls.

Naturally, people recommend HSU, SVS and Velodyne. Look on the used market (i.e. audiogon) and you will find what you want in the reasonable price range.

I love how my Velodyne ULD-15 works, it outperforms DD-series subs, but it took me a lot work (i.e. a complete rebuild of the amp and some work on teh box), and that sub was originally built in 1989!

Also consider a 1000 dollar+ Sunfire. They have a series that comes in smaller boxes, starts at a 1000 watts RMS and by the time you get to the 12" you're below 20hz.

As someone above said...if you want to "feel" the bass you need to get below...kind of like the Buttkicker bass modules. By the way, Lazy Boy has teamed up with Buttkicker to produce a recliner that has a Buttkicker unit in its base. There's a solution for you!

I have a number of mid-range subs. My best is a Boston Acoustics 300 watt 12 inch. It's OK, not a 800 dollar plus SVS, Velodyne, or HSU. But a bit better than the Polk PSW505--which, by the way was a pretty good sub--best Home Theater/music compromise in that price range by Polk. I haven't heard the new digital series that has replaced it.

    Good luck,

I have a psw250 on a concrete floor in an open basement and you can feel it rumble the first floor of our house and feel it slightly on the second floor. Its about 2 feet away from the closest wall in the basement. My dad used to have a phase technology 12" subwoofer. It was expensive but no more than $1000 and that subwoofer was used on the first floor. It would rattle the whole house, no joke. You could feel the air moving around you when you were sitting anywhere in the living room. My goal is to pick up a phase technology sub, but only an 8" for money reasons, but in reviews people have had problems keeping it from moving around or "dancing" on a hard floors because it has that much power. Just my 2 cents. Good luck
    AVR - Yamaha Aventage RX-A800
    Amps - B&K Components ST2140 (for mains) and Parasound HCA-1000A (bi-amping center)
    Mains - RT1000i Towers
    Center - CS400i
    Sub - BIC Acoustech PL200

My neighbors listen to very good music, whether they like it or not

Why don't you said earlier that you are hearing impaired and wanted to have body shaking bass so people can give you better suggestions. Since you can only feel and not hear the bass notes, the Polk DSW or PSW will not work for you since you need to feel vibrations.

The PSW1000 will hit your chest so hard you literally feel it. In Master and Commander it feels as if the cannon balls are going through you. Of course the volume needs to be elevated, but even at the elevated level the rest of the movie is fine, but look out when the fighting begins.

However, it appears Polk no longer sells the PSW1000.
