I eat my words. I'm listening to "The Magic of Lang Lang" and it's very enjoyable except for the live recordings that tend to pickup folks coughing.

Very good, BP, but what specific performance did you get, since there're dozens of the Mahler 1st available. There's a whole world of great music waiting for you out there, often at absurdly low prices.

I can attest to that...I just started my classical collection. I picked up these three...
Mahlers Second Symphony by Claudio Abbado,
Holst "The Planets"
and Mozart:The Violin Concertos:Sinfonia Concertante: Artist:Giuliano Carmignola
All three for a total of 15 bucks and change. They were all used, but were in excellent condition. I couldn't find a scratch on any of them, except for a couple little insignificant surface scratches on Mahlers Second Symphony. Plays fine though, so I'm happy. The nirvana inducer-

I've been youtubing a bunch of classical music for the last few hours to find some stuff that I like.
Someone recommend me a good version of Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy if anyone has a good one to suggest.
Just got done watching Gil Shaham with the Berlin Philharmonic Abbado playing both parts of it...and I was blown away...to say the least.
I think I need to get myself a violin...I don't think there is any instrument on the face of the earth that allows you to express so much emotion. I've been playing guitar for 12 years now...I think it's time to pick up the violin too, I've always wanted to.The nirvana inducer-

Mahlers Second Symphony by Claudio Abbado,
QUOTE]
Well tell me me your reaction. I was floored the first time I heard it.
I heard Claudio conduct Mahlers second at the Boston Symphony. At one point there is a very soft distant sound of a flute, I think, that is far away. Claudio had the flute player leave the stage and go out the stage door down a corridor. Claudio stood at the stage door and conducted the flute player's volume. It was very convincing sound of far away sound that was slowly coming back. Resurrection High Point. Claudio can work the dynamic range of the second like no one I have ever heard.
The last movement is an extreme test for your system in my opinion. There is so much going on. -
There are so many wonderful classical music CDs out there. It mayne difficult to chose where to start and what to buy.
May you all consider getting a good tuner and antenna and finding a NPR station that broadcasts classical music. You will find many options to listen to. The sound quality is very good on many NPR stations with little compression and some stations broascast live performances. -

The performance of Mahler's 1st was by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Seiji Ozawa, from a Deutsche Grammophon CD I picked up for 8 dollars. I didn't know what to expect, I was very pleased. Incidentally, for those who know this symphony, is the reoccurring theme in the 4th movement Frera Jaca? It sure sounds like it.Mains - Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grand

Good ear, BP. The next to last movement(the 3rd in most performances, which omit the 2nd "Blumine" movement)is in fact a funeral march formed around a variation on Frere Jacques.
-
Curt, in addition to the Perlman performances of the Sibelius and Korngold concertos, which I linked in the other thread, Perlman has an excellent Spanish disc which includes both Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy and his Zigeunerweisen, which you'll probably also like. Several shorter pieces by Sarasate and others in which he's accompanied on the piano by Samuel Sanders are also included. Nearly 80 minutes of music in fine sound and at a bargain price.

If you want entry level into Classical, watch The Little Einsteins.
I'm not kidding. I used to watch it all the time with my kids and started to get familiar with some of the tunes and the composers.
One of the composers is Bedrich Smetana, esp. this one-conducted by Kubelik.
Ah Ma Vlast...just awesome. I never thought I could get so into a classical piece. :cool:____________________

Favorites? Where to begin? A short list:
Maurizio Pollini: Beethoven -- Late Piano Sonatas (DG, CD/AAD)
Gardiner & OAE: Beethoven -- Symphonies (DG, CD/DDD)
Karajan & BSO: Beethoven -- Symphonies 1962 recordings (DG, CD/AAD)
Stern &c.: Beethoven & Bruch -- Violin Concertos (CBS)
[Gardiner is "ideosyncratic", lacking the better word for it, now, also is performed in an early music style, versus Karajan.]
Sinopoli &c: Schubert -- Symphonies 8 & 9 (DG, CD)
Abbado & COE: Schubert -- Symphonies 1-6, 8-9, Grand Duo arr. Joachim (DG, CD)
(early music)
Harry Christopher & The Sixteen: Tallis -- Spem in Alium (Coro, SACD)
Musica Antiqua Praha: Grandi, Legrande?, Legrenzi?, Italian Baroque, and Kromeriz Archives CDs (Supraphon, CD/??D) [think thats all of them]
(very early music)
Sequentia: Lost Music of a Rhineland Harpist (DHM, SACD)
Sequentia: red & blue "Christmas" albums (DHM, CD/DDD?)
Bagby's solo Beowulf DVD arrives next week. Concert was a complete winner, hope DVD is too.
[not so much: Edda & Rhinegold Curse CDs, but will revisit soon]
(more early music, all CD, some may be ADD/AAD)
Michel Cardin: Weiss London Manuscript lute series (SNE)
Robert Barto: Weiss Complete lute series (Naxos)
Various: Milan/DaCrema/DaMilano lute/vihuela works (Naxos)
Various: Fernando Sor published guitar works (Naxos)
Various: international guitar champion albums (Naxos)
Daniel Benko: Bakfark Complete Works, lute (Hungaraton)
Hopkinson Smith: lute Weiss Milan Bach anything (Astree)
Asperen: Soler complete harpsichord works (Astree)
anything recorded written by Schobert (except maybe some on Pierre Verany)
Bamert & LMP: Contemporaries of Mozart series (Chandos)
also most recordings of works by:
Druschetzky (Symphony on Multisonic, Partita on CRD etc.)
Vanhal (symphonies on Chandos, Naxos, etc.)
Hummel (concertos on Chandos, etc.)
Martinu (esp. Symphonies on BIS, concertos, orchestral)
Copland (even Piano Sonata & Piano Fantasy)
Ives (really only orchestral on CBS, and Concord piano sonata on ???, green jacket)
This was the short list. My CD collection predates any serious stereo, so the list may not have fit all of everyones hopes (some analog material), but I hope some folks will find it useful.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna end up getting one sometime soon. I can't really afford it at the moment, maybe later in the year though. I'm gonna have to start looking around and price shopping a bit. I used to play mostly death metal and all that when I was younger myself...my musical tastes have grown up a bit. I can't do the whole raging, screaming, pissed off at the world, playing as fast as you possibly can bit anymore...lol Anymore I play mainly acoustic stuff, a lot of Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, some Stones here and there, a lot of stuff like that...the violin is my next step though I think. I've messed around on them a little bit before, and I could manage to make it sound halfway decent...kinda...The nirvana inducer-
