pushed the monitor 50's kinda hard the other day

A friend of mine is a bonified sound engineer, so whenever he starts talking about anything having to do with audio, I shut up and listen.

So, the other day he comes over with a CD he says he put together the night before, and asked if I wouldn't mind giving it a listen.

I throw the thing in the CD player and hand him the remote. I told him the volume was all him.

Just then, he starts to really crank it. I mean he just let it rip with the volume. It happened so fast that I couldn't even believe it was happening. I had never turned my system up that high the whole time I've owned it.

He just kept turning it up louder and louder to the point where it seemed like the speakers were being pushed to their limit. I could not hear any distortion, but it still seemed like they weren't meant to be played that loud.

I just kept thinking well he's the professional --he knows what he's doing. And, at the same time, I was stunned at how much of a jerk he was being. The whole time I've known him, he's been a really laid back, respectful guy.

The whole episode lasted about 10 minutes before I asked him to turn it down, after which he did.

My speakers sound fine. But, is it possible that some damage was done? Will it make itself more evident in, say, a week from now?

On a positive note, he did say he was impressed with how the Monitor 50's sounded, which I guess is a real compliment coming from an industry "professional."

Thanks for looking.

Were the speakers already broken in, or did you just get them real recently?

If you can't hear anything wrong with them now I wouldn't think any damage would show up at a later time...anyone correct me if I'm wrong though.

Sounds like the guy was a real **** either way...I think I would have taken control of the remote after he did that. My stereo is my domain...I don't let anyone else touch it...and for just that reason.

The receiver is rated at 90W. Although this is below what your speakers can handle typically an underpowered receiver will kill the tweeters due to distortion. Have a careful listen to the tweeters to make sure they are functioning. Also, visually inspect the woofers to see if anything looks odd.

I have not heard about latent failure, but I am not an expert.

Don't hand your remote to your friend again.

ask your audio engineer friend for the keys to his car. and go drive it around the neighborhood in 1st gear and red line it for 10 minutes with him watching or sitting in the passengers seat.. see what his expression is on his face then.
that's basically what he did to your speakers. FOR NO GOOD REASON

ask him why he wanted to listen to this CD at such volume? Does he do that at his own house? How many speakers has he killed by doing this already? Don't let him near your stereo system anymore.

He couldn't have pushed it too hard otherwise your AVR would have clipped and that, both of you would have heard.

Thanks for the all the replies.

Yes they were broken in before-hand, so I guess that wasn't an issue.

Also, they were set to the "small" speaker setting on the AVR.

I got a good kick out of danger boy's post. I think that's the attitude I'm going to take from this point forward.

Next time I see him, I will ask him what came over him.

Your Marantz probably handled that fairly well ... their receivers, like harman/kardon enjoy a very good reputation, and he would probably have had to get about fifteen or twenty "clicks" (very rough guess) from maximum to be in the danger zone IMO. If maximum is +8dB, then hopefully he did not go beyond -10dB; if maximum is +18dB, then hopefully he did not go beyond 0dB ... It really depends on what true power output the receiver can generate, and how it was calibrated. Anything at 75dB or less, measured with a SPL meter, is probably never going to generate problems on most receivers. 85dB and above is taking risks except with the best receivers IMO. I have my receiver calibrated so that 0dB is "reference", or 85dB. It also depends on how many speakers the receiver is driving: two, or more. If only two or three, then the risk for damage is even more limited than with five or seven.

Like others have said, just take a tube of some sort and use it to listen to the tweeters (the tube helps isolate them from the woofers). If they all sound OK, you are fine. I cannot imagine your receiver blowing the main drivers on a Polk Monitor 50 speaker.

Just for clarification, at what level do you usually listen and what level did he turn the volume up to? I know I listen to music louder than some (from a recent discussion thread on the topic), so my listening habits might sound rediculously loud to someone that usually listens at very moderate levels, even if I would never approach "risky" levels with any equipment that wasn't mine.
    Alea jacta est!

Loud is in the beholder. What I consider loud is nothing compared to what my kids think is loud. What spl do you normally listen at? I'm sure you noticed where your friend turned it up to. Did it clip? If not, maybe it wasn't that loud after all. If your gutsy turn it up to there and take note of the spl and compare the two.

qft....Im very anal about people touching my stuff. I treat all my stuff with great care, and I paid for the stuff I own (and I might add I have expensive tastes) so I dont let people touch my stuff usually.
