Questions about the Sound Bar 360

Just purchased the sound bar 360 and had a few questions, wondering if anyone can help....
1. In hooking up the system, I am trying to do it all with HDMI cables. I purchased an HDMI splitter and have the TV as the output. The cable box and the 360 box are in the input spots. I am unable to get audio. I have to use the optical cable between the cable box and the 360 box to get the audio. Is this correct or do I need to change the set up?
2. When listening to the sound on the system, it sounds like the volume coming out of what would be the center channel ( the voices) is lower in volume than some of the background voices, is there something I could do to correct this?
