Bad speakers, bad amp, or just a bad cd?

I played a new Christmas cd for the first time this morning and was annoyed at the sound quality. It's a Telarc cd of classical piano music by Bach, and I played it at low volume through my venerable Luxman R-404 amp and Polk Monitor 10's.
So, what's with the funny "bzzt" noise that I hear on certain notes? I tested another piano cd with more forceful playing, and even turned the volume up, but didn't hear the same noise at all.

Welcome CPKC. You just answered your own question. If it had been the speakers or receiver the noise would have continued regardless of what cd you put into play.

Take the CD out to your car and see if the same notes do the same thing. Then you'll know it's the CD. I have a couple CD that have a bad spot or two built in. I happen to know that there are some studio masters that got by with glitches in them that way also.

There is also a possibility that the CD is marginal & will play on some machines OK, but will have problems on others.

Another thing to look for is: do the noises occur in exactly the same place each time? When you hear a noise, back the music up a few seconds & replay again. Intermittent noise issues have been a prelude to failure on CD players for me.

    Cheers, Jim

Thanks to all -- I'll check it in the car tomorrow.

I'll be disappointed if it is the cd -- Telarc has a great reputation -- though that's way better than a problem with my system.
