Turntable issue?

I have a Technics SL1100 with an Ortofon cartridge. The sound is not "steady"...meaning that it seems to go up and down slightly and "clear/not clear" for lack of a better term.
Is this a sign of the cartridge starting to go? Or is there some other issue with the TT?
I've isolated the problem to the turntable because this happens when it's plugged into either the 2-channel system or the multi-channel system.

I would guess it may be the catridge.Can you get a spare one or borrow one to check?Or try to find one on audiogon for cheap?Try to find a place with a money back return policy that way if yours is bad you can return it and get a better one.SDA-2BTL with custom IC

Joe it sounds to me like a clear case of the cartridge getting (gotten) old. If the cartridge has a removable stlyus, I would try that first. If the cartridge is not that expensive and you can afford it right now go for a better cartridge rather than changing out the stylus. However, before you do anything, break and make the cartridge wire connections and try it. If that doesn't work, try my suggestions above.

I thought I had some extra carts and I did. I replaced it with a Shure M97xe and the problem went away. Thanks for the suggestions.
