Well, against my will, I was forced to install Vista on my comp since my XP cd was no where to be found, I'm trying to download McAfee. I have the file downloaded via the Internet. When I click on it to open it, it asks me what I want to open it with. I dont have a zip file extractor that I know of, so I tried to download 7zip. Got the same question, what do I want to open it with...any suggestions? (besides uninstalling Vista...I would if I could)

Get Trend, works great with Vista.

Will that make it automatically pick the right program to open it up with?

It seems like it just doesn't have a program to open it with, thats why i tried to DL 7zip, which it doesn't have a program to open that either! I'm not terribly great with computers either.

If it still doesn't want to load go to the user access control panel and turn off all of vista security and it should load. I'd use AVG as it's very friendly with Vista and it's free. 100% effective.

IMO they got ahead of themselves with the 64 vs the 32, it will be better in the long run but everyone else has to play catch up.

    This is a prime example....

I'm not sure I'm making myself clear. This thing will load as soon as I tell it what program to open it up with...will disabling the UAC automatically pick a program or am I missing something?

You have to browse to wherever you installed 7-zip. Used to be, winzip was free for at least unpackaging. But again, you have to browse to the Program Files directory the app installed itself into and tell Windows- hey, dummy- use that one!

I have both XP and Vista machines. Vista finds ways to annoy the crap out of me on an almost daily basis. Sorry for your loss (of xp).

sounds more like you have a file association problem. Do you have this problem with other install files? If so, try this or http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.html GL

Ok, the problem is Service Pack 1. I didn't even think about it, but I downloaded it today and now I can't look at PDF websites that I was looking at this morning (pre-SP1, aka, the 'No Problems Period')

    Way to be counterproductive Microsoft.

    Can I delete it?

Should be able to roll it back in whatever Vista's version of Add/Remove Programs is now.
I guess I need to gwtp and learn up on it, although I really don't want to.

Can't say I ever encountered that problem on a fresh load of Vista. Decompression of zip files is native to the OS. You have some other odd issue going on there.

What do you mean you can't look at PDF websites? What does that mean?

    Uninstalled it...same problems.

What i mean by i cant look at PDF websites, that if I click on http://www.fema.gov/pdf/library/pfd_all.pdf (just the first site i could find), instead of opening it, when i click it, it opens a 'Save As' box. The PDF file I looked at yesterday morning on the internet wouldnt open a few hours later...when the only thing that I had done different was download sp1.

Definitely sounds like a file association issue. Of course we cant ignore possible malware infection either. I'm not saying that SP1 wasn't the cause, but I haven't had any issues with Vista unless it was with an app that wasn't x64 capable.

Have you tried reinstalling the Adobe Reader? (for the pdf issue). Of course you could alwys try to manuall fix the association, but reinstalling should be just as easy.

For the zip file, what options are shown if you Right Click the zip file? Is decompress or extract an option?

I cant download ANYTHING because I dont have any programs to open up the download with.

What I think the problem is is that its not saving correctly. When I right click on the adobe thing I just downloaded, or 7zip, or mcafee...it says the file type is 'file' (none of the options you listed appear)

Its not downloading as 7zip.exe, its downloading as 7zipexe

For the PDF issue, reinstall Acrobat reader. Sounds like the IE plugin got zapped with the SP install.

Cody, that first link was imbedded in the "here". Here it is: http://blog.jtbworld.com/2007/03/have-you-lost-your-exe-file-extension.html. Read through that, you might want to give it a try. I've never had this problem on my one vista machine here.

That's odd right there-perhaps its not an association issue after all, but how the browser is opening the files and losing the "dot" in the filename thus leaving it extension-less.
