What size is the screen and what is the distance to the screen. This will tell you. I sit 12.5 ft away and on a 50" screen I cannot tell the difference. From 6 ft away yes, but not 12.5.

I don't even think you can get a 1080i tv anymore.. they should alll be 1080P that can also play the 1080i "I" standing for interlace. I'm pretty sure any set you buy currently will be 1080p, but also handle 1080i, 720p, 480i, etc.

There is a difference but if you have a 40 inch tv and sitting past 9 feet away, you will not be able to notice a difference.

The better question is how far away will you be sitting from your new tv? This will tell you the screen size you should get.

Agreed but I would definitely pull the trigger on a 1080p set and be done with it.

There are plenty of smaller TV's that have not made the migration to 1080p yet, mostly because it's pointless to have a 32" TV running 1080p, unless you're using it as a computer monitor and sitting 9 inches away.

I know a lot about TVs... im strictly asking this as a personal experience question. i can find plenty of 1080i/720p TVs out there.

A 40" 720P will serve you well. 1080P is wasted only anything smaller than a 50" and even then you have to sit very close to tell the difference.

Suggest Sony or Samsung for LCD.

You want progressive, not interlaced, because progressive looks better. It's not a question of 1080i vs. 1080p, it's more a question of 1080 vs 720, because on a 1080i screen the native resolution is likely in the 700's and the TV will convert everything to 720p anyway.

So the real answer to your question is whether you need 720p or 1080p, and that will depend on how far away you sit and how big the screen is.

You will not see an improvement with 1080P on a 40", you will get some features and contract that may make the picture look better.

I thought you mentioned budget as a factor. If you can get a 1080P 40" within 15% more than 720P, do it.

Do some searches for "Is 1080P worth it" and look for HDTV seating distance.

I have owned 4 HDTVs since 2000. LCD, RP and Direct view. Personally I prefer my 73" Mits RP CRT over any fixed pixel display, properly calibrated of course.

You have the information you need to make a descsion, rest is up to you.

The only way to natively display 1080i resolution is on a CRT tech based display. LCD panels are either 1366x768 (~720p) or 1920x1080 (1080p).

But yes, absolutely, the most important question to ask is seating distance.

Also when shopping for displays, panel quality and image processing matter much more than raw resolution.

I read somewhere that 1080p is twice the resolution of 720p. so I think for most people they would not notice much if any difference.. but when you're talking watching HDTV or BD, why setttle for lesser resolution?

    Just throwing this out there.

Having a TV that's capable is one thing but what will you be watching on it?
    From what I understand:
    -HD-DVD, Bluray, Xbox360 (and PS3??) are all 1080p capable
-Upconverting AVRs, and DVD players will output 1080i or p, but that doesn't really count
-Broadcast television, cable, FiOS, etc are all 720p or 1080i. I don't recall what OTA is, but I'd imagine its 720p or 1080i.

My philosophy is just get the best currently available. I bought a 720P Vizio about a year and half ago for the bedroom thinking "it's just the bedroom". I now look upon that as a big mistake. Now I find myself shopping for Pioneer Elites, . Spend the extra cash, there are great deals out there and just end the madness.

    People who know things.

1080p is worth it if you have a large screen or you sit very close. A 40" screen 8ft away, it's not just "eh you'll never notice", it's "it's physically impossible to tell the difference" between 720 and 1080. I know what it's like to want the best thing, and I know in this hobby people like to throw scientific knowledge and objective information out the window, but seriously, save your money.

Then why even invent 1080 resolution? If you say 720 is identical to 1080 resolution. I can tell a difference between 720 and 1080 and i sit farther away then 9 inches from the screen.

Just saying that 720 is the lowest acceptable resolution that is considered HD. 1080 is what is considered full HD resolution and is now the standard.

Yes you can still buy 720 sets... but I think that's going to change.

1080p is needed as screen sizes get larger, or when people sit close to the screen. If you sit 8' away from a 50" screen, then 1080p will be noticeable, whereas if you sit 14' away from the same screen you will physically not be able to see a difference.

Huh? You CAN tell a difference in bigger screens or as you sit closer. I didn't mean to imply that there's no difference all the time and I hope I didn't say that. It makes a HUGE difference if you're talking about a giant screen, or if you're using it as a computer monitor. On a 40" screen you have to sit very close for the extra pixels to be perceptible. That's all.

I would get a 1080p (both accepts as an input, and displays) if I was to buy something today. Since most HD TV (all but 2 stations last I looked) are 1080i, and Blu-Ray is 1080p you would get the best possible picture since there is no up-converting (720 into 1080) happening, only de-interlacing (1080i into 1080p) at worst which has a negligible effect.

Take Blu-Ray, media on disk at 1080p, passes 1080p signal, TV displays 1080p. :)

As for resolution and sreen size, it all amounts to pixel density. There needs to be a certain amount of density for any given size, at a given distance. That is what the charts that were mentioned about ultimately calculate. You can have overkill, and not enough depending on the combo of resolution and distance.

    I have a 62" 1080p at 12' and a 42" 1080p at 8' (computer monitor) and both look great!
