My deal with Madmax

Back in May I purchased a pair SRS-SDAs from Madmax. At the time he lived in Fredericksburg Maryland (I think). He only wanted $850 for the pair as he stated there was some damage to them and they needed the IC cable. I thought what the heck – I would try to put this together. It turns out that Chuck was moving to Colorado and I live in Montana so this might work out as he said that he would ship them out when he moved the rest of the stuff for his house. Although he did not require it I sent him a check for the full amount so that no matter what he wouldn’t be stuck with these in Colorado without being paid for them.
Well gas went through the roof and I didn’t get down to pick them up until the week before Thanksgiving. I was amazed when I got to Chuck’s house. He had fixed the cloth where it had been coming loose. He took the time to make an IC using connectors (blade-blade) that look like original Polk and used better speaker wire that I use in my system, he had them out of the crates and running to make me feel more secure, and he also threw in an extra pair of mid range drivers. He had also upgraded all 8 of the tweeters before the sale. They now reside in my living room as the fronts in a surround music system and my other pair resides in the rear (they haven’t be upgraded yet) and they sound great and look great too. The grills are almost perfect.
We have a great group of folks on this forum. Chuck was great to deal with and I look forward to dealing with him again – he had a pair of 1.2s in walnut I would love to have. Chuck set a standard for dealing with used audio gear that we all should aspire to.

Chuck is a cool cat. He as at my old house years ago. I sold him some racks. I also feed him Pizza. He loved it(Anytime man, you are welcome to come again).

I also met up with him and purchased a pair of Lsi9's. He is a great person to do business and hang out with.

Phil, I asked the forum about four SDA SRS 2 in the front and rear and nobody thought it was a good idea. It looks like you thought the four speaker setup was awesome. Did you actually hear them together. I was wondering what your thoughts were about four big boys together in the corners and what was your friend using to drive them. Thanks.

Ya Chuck is a good guy to deal with. I bought a rack from him over the summer and I saw the horns and the 4 kicker subs in his house. I didn't get to hear them because they where unhooked for him to ship them. How ever we got to talking and I said I don't have a TT. He said he has one in the basement that I could have free all it needed was a belt. Well we go to look at it and he actually had put a belt on it but forgot. So he gave me a fully working TT free. He also tried to give me some speakers but I didn't have any room for them. Great guy!

Four big boys in the corners works very well. Four the past 6 or 7 years I have used 2.3s in the rear and this was only a minor although signiicant improvement. I set them up so that the lefts in the rear are on the same side as the lefts in the front. I use the IC in both the front and the rear. I use this system 99% for music as I only watch about 6 movies a year. All of the stereo sound fields (2 in front 2 on the sides and 1 in the rear) function well and in a sound all around recording where you hear individual instruments in different locations they are great. Direct ambient recordings aslo sound great as does synthesized surround (I use Neo 6). Give it a try - you may not llike it but what do you have to lose. Let us know if you set it up.

Thanks for the kind words. I had the SDA's hooked to an acurian amp and a 3960 DVD player in the garage so Phil could audition them but time was pretty short and it was about 6AM so we just verified they worked properly. Truthfully I spent a few nights in the garage listening to them just because I wanted to. Even with the little 30 watt amp they were kicking some butt. Phil was great to deal with and is always welcome to visit. A few days ago I got the other pair into the house and I doubt I'll ever sell them, they are the last pair of SDA's I own. They are in my 12' x 12' media storage room and are really something special to listen to. Phil, I hope you find the replacement tweeters as pleasing as I did. I had a hard time listening to the standard SL-2000 tweets after hearing the replacements.

I have a very similiar configuration, except the SDA-2's are in the rear, 2.3's in the front. Very interesting way to hear music, good fun!
