I grew up in Detroit till I was 9. Still go back once a year or so to visit family, etc. A few times in my life we've gotten turned around and had to drive through some of the not-so-nice areas (easy to find not-so-nice areas down there) and it's pretty scary. Surreal scary. . . especially in the winter with smoke / steam coming out from sewer caps, hookers on every corner, lot of thugs and drug dealers. Always told when we drove through those areas to look straight ahead, don't stare or make eye contact with anyone, etc. I'm guessing these weren't even the really bad parts of town.

Even in a decent part of downtown Detroit, we finished up eating some Coney Island and started walking to our car (probably around 2pm during the summer). A bum / crack head asked us for money, then mumbled some other stuff, then walked to the middle of the street and started to urinate in broad daylight. No one else walking around, etc. even blinked at it. Like it was totally normal to piss in the middle of a downtown street during the middle of the day. . .

I never feel uncomfortable in Dallas. No matter where I go, I feel much more safe down here. . .

Stay off Harry Hines after dark.:D
There's bad spots in Dallas. We had the murder tittle a couple of years ago.
Of course, as always, stay away from former Dallas Cowboys players.

I am the craziest and most dangerous person on my street. I kinda like it that way:D

Forget about the McCain or Obama political signs on the lawn. I had vote for Genghis Kahn and Hitler signs out front. The pit bulls kept the liberal Militia away.

Violent crime is on the rise, the economy keeps sinking to new lows. It has been predicted by a very credible source that inside 4 years America will become the first de-industrialized nation in the history of the world. Blame the politicians and greedy management. From the looks of these pictures the downward spiral has been on going for a while. I can't even begin to imagine having to squat in one of those houses

Why anyone would squat in a decrepit house in the ghetto is far beyond me. I'd rather live in the woods and eat twigs and deer.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

In fact, the only California city in the top 5 is Oakland and the only other one is the top 15 is Richmond, California.

I often think that Oakland gets a bad rep about its crime. I used to live in Oakland and I still drive thru/visit the city going to work almost everyday. My dog's daycare is in Oakland. There's a lot of positive news all around town that hardly anyone ever talk about....revitalization of Chinatown, the new housing near Oakland Coliseum (oh sorry....The Oracle  ) and downtown, Yoshi's jazz club @ Jack London Square, etc. It's just that crime stats have overshadowed anything the city is trying to achieve. I swear, there're people across the Bay Bridge in San Francisco whose image of Oakland is entirely formed from the crimes they see on TV....that the city sucks as much as the Oakland Raiders :D

Richmond? That's a whole different story. Richmond, the city, is not to be confused with the Richmond district of San Francisco.

So East Palo Alto is no longer the murder capital it once were? I guess that Ikea really helped.

I dont miss jersey one bit. There are places in Camden that the cops wont even go. The raleigh area is in the top 10 places to live in the country.

I miss the Camden I grew up in! It was a beautiful city. I lived on Ferry Avenue right near the churches, with two drug stores on the corners. We walked around the corner to Frank's Cold Cuts for groceries. We went to the Acme about 10 blocks north for big shopping. I LOVED my town growing up. It is sad to see it as such.

I'm not going to lay claim to Detroit being the best place because it's not. But down around Fox Theatre, for example, it's pretty cool. Had a lot of good times hanging at Cheli's Bar (Chris Chelios's place) and Hockeytown Cafe. Comerica Park where the Tigers play is also fun. There's also a lot of good nightlife.

Greektown is pretty cool, a lot of restaurants and shops. Walk down to the waterfront and you get great views of the river. Restaurants like Tom's Oyster bar nearby with rooftop seating.

Drive east on Jefferson and it's no longer Detroit (but close) and you come upon Lake St. Clair and the view is just jaw dropping. Miles of the lake on your right and mansions on the left. Lot's of marinas chock full of yachts.

Like any city, it has it's bad areas. Like any city it has it's good areas. Again, not trying to say it's the best or anything, but some of the pictures posted here simply show the worst areas. Pick any city and you can probably dredge some pictures up like that.

Newark has been off the hook lately.

Believe me, I am from Detroit area and I can vouch for its rep. I once saw a T-Shirt that had "I am so bad I vacation in Detroit"

I have Detroit T-shirt story too.

I actually grew up in the Detroit area in the 60's and 70's. Rough then. rougher now.

About 10 years ago I flew back to Detroit for a work related conference at the "Ren" Center.

Parked the rental car and walked toward the Ren Cen, saw a vendor right near the entrance with a folding table piled high with black T-shirts. They read:

"Detroit...Where the weak are killed and eaten"

Nice to see the Chamber of Commerce promoting the city.

    I should have bought one.

    Camden budget cuts.
About 335 workers, representing one-sixth of the local government work force, lost their jobs, according to Mayor Dana Redd. It was worst in the public safety departments, where nearly half the police force and close to one-third of the city's firefighters were laid off.
