Is this a good unit ?

Seems like it must be the entry unit, but it`s still a Blu Ray Player , so it can`t be all bad.

What would be the advantages of getting a unit farther up the food chain ?

It is backordered, but @ $199, it seems like a good deal......and a cheap way to get into Hi-Def veiwing..

Been thinking of selling some things and getting either a 46"~50" LCD or Plasma by the start of the New Year...

Any thoughts ?

I just picked up two today from Sears for $179.99 each and although it's Sonys entry level Blu ray player it shows a great picture and for $199 it's a deal

Hey Leroy, what do you think of the audio on SD dvds?
In terms of audio, i truly feel sorry for the visually impaired. How can they know what they like if they cant read google?

    Thanks for the input....
It sounds like a deal to me also

I wonder what the mid to upper levels offer that this one does not ?

    P4L....
I hear that the audio on these are even better than the standard, and Hi-Def units produce

Not sure if thats possible or not though

i believe the 350 does not bitstream DTS-HD MA, not a biggie since you can just select LPCM and let your a/v decode, add to that only a handful of movies have DTS-HD MA 7.1(but the ones i have seen sound kick ****)..as bad as i want a stand alone player to take over my PS3's movie playback, i will will have to wait until an affordable BR player comes along that does all the decoding

supposedly sears had the panny BD35 for $150 on thursday but i found out too late, that player decodes all latest formats internall, but it does not support 2.0, not a big deal for me anyway since i just really watch the movies and rarely get into the "extras"

regardless its great the BR players are lowering in price, now its time to price the movies the same so it becomes more mainstream

Haven't had a good chance to listen to SD DVD's but I can say while the BD picture is great the SD DVD picture wasn't so great IMO, but I didn't buy it for the upconverting features.

Yeah i'm only using the coax so am only getting the core DD/DTS. I find compared to my old Denon 2900 that the sony is a lot louder across the front channels + the LFE, but the rears are somewhat subdued?

I'm really impressed with the PQ though.

Is there any talk of any update will let the 350 decode dts master. I just bought it today and I need it to decode because my yammy in bedroom only has hdmi pass through so I need the player doing all of the decoding.

The Sony 350 is a nice Entry Level Blu ray player. We sold it for 399.99 when it came out and it's worth every penny. I would pick one up at that price allday. It also has a fast start up time in 12 seconds. Almost matching the Ps3.

    Go for it

I was able to get in on the Sony Sale. (it was backordered when I placed my order, but the order went through so I assume I will get it eventually)

Anyway - my thought was I would use it to get into blu-ray and if better players come along later, I can upgrade the player in my main rig and use this one as an extra player in another system in the house. (and for $150, I would not feel overly bad about doing so)

It is a basic player, but it is also in about its 4th or 5th generation so it should work fine for my needs. I thought about holding out for the 550 (the next step up in the sony line and has multi-channel analog outputs) but I decided the additional $200 it would cost is just not worth analog outs to me. I would be better served putting that money twords blu-rays or a pre-amp with HDMi inputs.

While the 350 may not internally decode DTS-HD MA (which would produce a PCM signal to pass to the receiver), it does pass it as bitstream to an AVR for decoding there, in which case I think you would need to be in direct mode on the player. Also, while only a handful of movies contain 7.1 tracks of any kind, DTS-HD MA 5.1 tracks are increasingly plentiful. Helped by the fact that both Fox and now Universal seem to be full on DTS-HD MA shops as their lossless option.

While the best black friday prices are gone (Transformers was only $9.99, Iron Man $14.99), Amazon still has 252 blu-ray titles, many in the $14-16 range with Kung Fu panda at $16.99. Some titles are even lower with Flags of our Fathers at $8.99.

Or you can try the buy more get more discount page here (You can pick up all six 007s for around 17 bucks each, then apply a $20 discount for 3 disks bought, $50 for all six disks, or $100 if you buy 10 disks total. There are 33 titles to choose from.):

You may find out in order to get a big improvement in picture quality you may have to spend 4 to 5 times what you got your Sony 350 for and it may not be worth the switch. Just a thought.

While I agree - it is also over double the cost I got the 350 for. It may not seem like alot, but I can get alot of Blu-Rays for the price difference. (or it is a start on a Pre/Pro that supports HDMi.)

Either way, for the price, the 350 sounds like a great entry level system. I can't wait for mine to arrive. (It was on backorder when I ordered it so not sure of the destination time)

I've got the S300 and for the price you're paying the S350 is a stellar deal. The picture quality with the right screen is astounding. It's a good music player (in the right chain) and does more codecs than mine. You're gonna love it, but a larger screen is going to do it justice. Just watched Wall E and Tropic Thunder this weekend...eye poppers.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE
