That's pretty funny, but I guess I still don't understand the huge bass craze in cars...

Those are SPL competitors. These guys arent the same punks you hear driving thru your neighborhoods at 3 AM with sheet metal rattling all to hell. These guys are competitors that take their sport very seriously and are working til 3 AM out in their garages on their systems. There is a lot of science and hard work that goes into getting a car speaker to make as much volume as a 747 at takeoff.

Heres a video of a car audio system that can be used as a hair dryer from MECA Kentucky State Finals this year.

Did you say sport? I was pretty good at most sports in high school but this is one I'm sure I would suck at but I'm gonna try.

Is that why the interior light is about to fall out?

It's loud, for sure... but I don't see the point in spending that much money on a system, especially in these economic times. Which is why I went from having db series speakers and 2 10" db subs, to having a stock stereo system (minus an aftermarket head unit that I got for $30 from dangerboy)
    Ludicrous gibs!

Why spend money on any sport then? You have a point, our economy is going down. If we'd stop wasting all our money on NFL, NBA, and baseball, we might turn this country back around!

I'm not Impressed by **** built systems in cars, I have yet to hear one that actually sounds good. They all are to loud , to much power, to much bass.

Design a audio system in a car that sounds good , then I'll be impressed.

    This is retarded.

You haven't been to PolkFest and listened to some of Polk's demo cars?

You should try going to a sound quality car stereo competition, you might be impressed then ;)

I was impressed by Thom's system, I'll give you that. And, I agree with you about sports... that's why I don't watch any and don't advocate any of the big sports. College and lower grade level are fine, because they actually teach kids a thing or two and get people in shape. Multi-million dollar contracts are rediculous.

Its not a "how good is the interior of your car" competition", it a "how loud can you make a set of subwoofers go" competition.

Because its fun and they enjoy it. Ive spent a ton of money the last 3 years competing in SQ and Ive had an absolute blast doing so. You have to have something in your life that gives you pleasure. How much have you spent on home audio gear? The average Joe on the street would think spending $500 for a set of RCA cables, or $1000 on a pre-amp is insane! So what? If its something you enjoy and it gives you pleasure, then why shoudnt you do it. Isnt that why youre working? To be able to enjoy your life?

Damn dude. If I could, I would love to fly you down for MECA world finals next year and let you sit in Matt Roberts truck or Kirk Proffits Acura or a host of other cars. Granted they wont be on par with reference level home audio gear but considering that youre sitting inside a car and not a listening room, I would guarantee you that youd be impressed. There are some guys out there, like the ones I mentioned, who have managed to build a system that resembles a home audio system more than a car audio system. Thats the holy grail to us and what we're all after and we love the challenge of trying to accomplish this and then going and competing against other guys trying to do the same.

There is a whole lot more to the car audio enthusiasts than the 17 year olds that came into Tweeter to have a box thrown in the back. A whole lot more.

Mac- how much have I spent on home audio?

    SDA2's- $175, plus $100 for two blown drivers = $275
    Adcom GFA-545- $215 delivered
    Denon CDP- $30 PF '05
    Hafler Pre- $0
    TT- $0
Cables- Maybe $15 for a spool of RatShack wire

Total - $505. Over the last 3 years... and I love it :)

I understand the point that you're trying to make, and if that's what you want to spend you hard-earned money on, that's great. My system makes me happy, and lets me relax after a long day at work with no extra money spent. Sure, I also throw some coin down for a case of lager every other week and a few games of bowling. But some of the money that gets spent on these systems is rediculous!!!

You don't even have to go to a competition to get examples of good car audio. Hell, you don't even have to go to Polk's install bay. Go to the parking lot on a PolkFest at Polk HQ and listen to some of the employees' cars and Club Polk members cars. I know of several here with car stereos that will rival what most people have for home set ups.

For those of us that aren't sponsored and we've paid out of pocket, our budgets for car stereo dwarf what some people have spent on multi-channel rigs. The world of car audio is much more expansive than the crap that auto companies label with names like Mark Levinson, Martin Logan, Pioneer, JBL, Harmon Kardon and even Bose. It's also much more expansive than the kid rolling down the street with 2,000 watts and dual 15 inch subs. There is cheap stuff and mid-level stuff and high end and even sky high end stuff. Most home audio guys never see what is REALLY out there because they just aren't looking for it. Competitions aren't even the best places to find that really great stuff because competitions tend to be dominated by big names. Big names are the only ones with the budgets to support high dollar competitors. So alot of boutique guys never see the light of day aside from a small, devoted following.

Add to that the fact that as people get older and buy houses and such, it gets easier to do home audio than car audio so tastes gravitate and even needs gravitate away from the car which becomes more of a tool that a source of fun and freedom. So the few that do stick with it are the ones the support the really great stuff and they are few and far between. Mainly because the kids that drive the "sport" don't have the money for a $2500 set of Rainbow components or $9000 for TruTech amps or $3500 for an imported Nakamichi head unit. But trust me, it's out there. But also, most people keep a car 5 maybe 10 years and then it's gone for the next appliance-mobile. You can buy a house and stay in it for the rest of your life and not think twice about it. A home environment is more stable in many ways, not just electronically and acoustically.

Then again, it's not really stupid either because alot of really great technology available in home audio and video equipment like delay boxes, time alignment, D-class amplification, hybrid amplification, MOSFET circuits, active crossover networks and a bunch of other stuff was either developed or perfected in the car audio staging lanes by those same kids that everybody thinks are wasting their time and money.

You'd also be surprised how many of those kids in the staging lanes end up being engineers and developers and technicians and such that design, build, sell and service all of the electronics that not only do you have in your stereo but also make your life a big easier through convenience and capability.
