building a home theatre
Hey guys , i just joined on here im from ontario canada.
anyhow i am looking at getting some polk speakers to use either with a HK receiver or a yamaha any suggestions?
also ive been looking at the lsi 25 towers but really i dont like the looks of them compared to the rti 12.
i want to run dual subs in the room its going in (as i understand great for action scenes)
i will not be doing any music listening with it.... well at least very minimal.
any suggestions would be good.
im sort of a newb.

If you have no intention of using for music, go RTi. If you plan to run 2 subs, the 12's might be overkill, but that's half the fun, right?
Amazon has a pretty good price on the 12's right now.

You are right that is a killer deal I found a pair or lsi 12 for about 1500 cdn and was going to get those. What would u do and why? Also what kind of center channel would u use? I'm sort of looking for someone to suggest a system to me and to explain why they picked that.
-
Whatever line you go with, I recommend getting a center channel from the same line.
You said your music listening will be minimal, which is why I said go RTi. The reason I chose LSi, is because I listen to music, a LOT, IMO, it would be unnecessary money spent for what you want them for.
In the end, you need to put in the time, and go listen to as many sets as you can, so you can judge each speaker's merits for yourself. Otherwise, it's like asking what color to paint your house......personal preference. -

Sound advice.
Can you be more specific with your goals. Is it for family movies, TV? Do you watch a lot of sports? Like it loud? Parties? Music preference? -
+1
I prefer HK receiver than yamaha with Rti speakers (personal preference)
Keep in mind that the 12s need power. Being use mainly for HT and with 2 subs, you could also consider the Rti8 or Rti10.
Happy listening! -
Stick with the RTi line. I would go with RTi10's instead of the 12's since you want to go dual subs. Center should be from the same line as the RTi. If you do plan on going LSi anyway you are going to need seperate amplification for them since they are 4ohm speakers and not many receivers out there can drive them. They are very current hungry. Eventually down the line you should get seperate amplification for the RTi's but they are 8ohm speakers and should not be a problem if you just use the receiver.58" Samsung Plasma (on wall)(calibrated)

hockey games and movies pretty much and the odd music listening too.
so if i got with the RTi A9 towers and use CSi A6 for the centre is that a good choice? is there something better? for the pricing i can get i can move into the vm series or the lsi series for not even 100.00 more or what about even the csi 20? -
its the RTi A9 ive been loooking at.
the ones that are current and on the site. -
did i loose all my helping friends with my newb questions???

did i loose all my helping friends with my newb questions???
I doubt it. Probably just everyone filling up on turkey and football.:D
Myself I would go for the RTiA7 CSiA6 and RtiA1s. Then try and catch the 10% off on two HSU VTF-2 MK3 subs (10% off while supplies last)
Next either a entry level AVR from HK or Yamaha that has pre outs and add a 3 or 5 ch amp. Like this or this one
Or go up to something closer to one of the HK or Yamaha top of the line models with high current capabilities.
Then there is this one from HK. Keep in mind that the power ratings for HK is with all ch. driven. So 75W from HK would be = to a higher W rating from others.
Maybe this one from Yamaha.
Not sure why you ask about those two brands, but I would not exclude the others; Onkyo, Denon, Marantz, Nad, Outlaw etc. But I have heard many Polk owners comment how well the Polks sound with HK.
What kind of budget are you working with? Is a new TV also part of this? How big of a room? (has a big impact on sub recommendations) Being in Canada and shipping/import fees could come into play for you as well in final decision making.
I made the selections I did based on size and price. I'm somewhat cheap, and do not want a room 60% full of speakers.
Like LessisNevermore said, best to go listen to as many set ups as you can of what catches your eye then narrow the field from there. -
ive been looking alot at this reciever:
Yamaha 7.2 Channel HDMI Home Theatre Receiver
and the Harman Kardon avr354 as well.
i like yamaha though. not sure why i just do.
as for pricing i work in a home theatre enviroment so i am entitled to a discount if you know what i mean!
a tv is not a concern i am sort of utilizing my 42" 1081 I rear projection right now.
so here is what i was thinking:
RTiA9 towers
LSi 9 bookshelfs
CSiA6 centre
however ive also got access to the monitor series are they "better"??? -
also the room i am wanting to use it in is 16L x 18w x 9H FT.
-
You could save some $ and substitute the LSi9s with FXiA6 as your rear speakers and go with the RTIa9 and CSiA6 for Home Theater use. This would be a great setup for HT use and very good for music-only listening. I wore my local AV salesperson out going back and forth between the LSi and RTiA series in their listening room. I concluded the RTiA series was better suited for HT use. As far as receivers go, the RTiA series are on the "bright" side (which is OK for HT) so I am also looking for a good receiver for HT that will also warm up the RTIa9s for 2-channel audio (or possibly go with a separate amp someday).
-
i cant get the FXiA6 so forget that idea.. but thanks anyway... plus im not going to be doing them for music listening i am going to be using them for HT use.

:mad:All the more reason why not to get the LSi's, especially if you are not even going to use them as your fronts. LSi's are musical speakers and are better suited for music and sure as heck not suited to be surrounds in an RTi system. If you can't get the FXi's than get RTi4's instead. Listen to what everyone here is telling you about LSi's and your needs. All it would be is a big waste of money especially down the road when they fry your receiver since they are 4ohm and current hungry speakers. But hey in the end it's your green right.58" Samsung Plasma (on wall)(calibrated)

Something doesn't add up here. -
You are better of with a complete set of either LSi or Rti don't mix. Listen before you buy as I had a yammy with Rti....glad I bought an HK. If you plan on any of the towers as fronts you will also be better off with seperate amplification. I own the 8s and those puppies kick butt with the monoblocks attached (I'm running marantz MA700s for my mains and an outlaw M200 for my centre) So my advice is quit asking us what we'd choose and go listen, but stick with either all LSi or all Rti and just cause you like yammy, don't be affraid to give HK a try you'll be surprised.
-
If your talking about Yammi's newest receivers go for them. Their GUI's are state of the art.

I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -
Ok - for 5.1 here is my recommendation.....
RTiA9 towers
CSiA6 centre
FXiA6 surrounds
If you are looking for 7.1, add in 2 RTiA3's as surround back speakers. (or if your back wall is closer than about 3' from your seating position, another pair of FXiA6's)
If the FXiA6 is just to large a speaker to hang on your wall, go with the FXiA4's instead.
The RTiA9 will still need an external amp to sound its best (just a 2 channel for those speakers, you can run the rest off the internal amps in your reciever). If you do not really want to add an amp, you may get a little better sound with a smaller pair of towers like the A5 or A7. If you can, it may be worth listening to the different RTiA towers with the reciever you plan to purchase, just to decide for yourself if the added cost is justified with your setup.
You are building a heck of a home theater. Enjoy.
MichaelMains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms) -
thanks for the help again guys.
im going to get back on here later tonight with what reciever i am going to use.
perhaps that will make things a bit easier! -
On caps, there are many numbering systems.
For example:
-12J200V is 12 uF and 200 VDC
-471 means 47 * 10^1 pF or 470 pF
-1000 likely means nothing, check the other side and report all numbers. Might be 100 pF, though.
Doy ou have a digital multimeter that can measure capacitance. The symbol on the meter is -||- . -
so as stated i was going to get back on here with some recievers i may look into getting to use with my HT
ive narrowed my selection down to this:
Yamaha 7.1 Channel HDMI Home Theatre Receiver (HTR-6190B)
Yamaha 7.1 Channel HDMI 1080p Receiver (HTR6290B)
Yamaha HTR6180 7.2 HDMI Receiver
Denon 7.1 Channel 1080p HDMI Receiver (AVR-889)
Pioneer 7.1 HDMI Home Theatre Receiver (VSX-9130TXH-K) -
Marantz good stuff also.

I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -
and as for my HT setup i was going to do this:
RTi A9 (fronts)
two FXi A6 (surrounds)
one CSi A6 (center)
unless you thought moving my surrounds from the Fxi A6 to the LSi /fx would be a better move. or changing my center to LSi C -

Go with these and the Pioneer and your golden!! Then pick up an amp for the fronts at least, or go with a 3 ch amp. -

only reason i would prefer i denon or yamaha is because of the automatic sound rezoning they offer i dont know if im calling it the rigt thing or not but its wehre you set the reciever up to automaticaly measure the room for sound.
as for my speakers am i making a good choice? or should i upgrade them to something else? i.e diff surrounds or rears?
like i said before im really new to all this so i really dont know how amps work.. guess i got alot of reading to do.
hope everyone had an awesome/safe weekend. and just wanted to say i really do appreciate all the help i have got. -
most new receivers have built in room calibration.
and stick with your choice in speakers and don't get the LSI surrounds -

ok i'll have to check that out.
any benefit of getting a pair of towers for the rears such as the TSI 300 OR 400 OR 500? -
No stick, to your current configuration and buy the receiver of your choice. Yammy, Denon, Pioneer Elite would be great for your setup. Pull the trigger and enjoy. For subwoofer check out SVS(www.svsound.com)Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!
