Don't suppose you'd be interested in a Meridian 518? It would do source selection and volume control (entirely in digital) and you'd feed it's output into the digital input of the DCX2496.

    Stereophile review here:
    http://www.stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/367/

I've got it in a package deal with a pre/pro that I actually wanted, so lemme know if you're interested.

You could always buy her a fake diamond.
Sigh, but that never seems to work.

I'll take the contrarian view on this issue. Keep what you have, and buy her aring. It is only a piece of electronic equipment, compared to a life time of happiness with a woman you love and loves you. Electronics come and go, spouses are meant to be kept forever. If I had to sell my gear for the benefit of my wife, I would not consider it a gift at all. It is what spouses do for each other.

Keeping what he has is the more expensive option. I still vote for no pre- you can make it happen with your existing gear & it's the cheapest option :)

Yeah, selling the gear is for my girlfriend. The privilege to do so is the gift for me, not the ring for her. I don't need the money ASAP. I just want to buy the ring ASAP because I'm that excited.

I've found after being married to the same woman for 30 years, that the material things in life are very unimportant in the great scheme of life. During the hard times, when all we had for audio was a transistor radio, she had her ring and I had mine. That is the bond between two people. I know this an audio board and your trying to have it all, now. Sometimes we can't have it all, now. Priorities have a way changing over time and we have to learn to accept them and look for the silver lining in the change.

I am married with children for 5years, went out with the same girl for 7 years prior to marriage (with ups and downs due to my young punk head). All I can say is make sure she is the one coz MARRIAGE is the beginning of your end if both of your foundation is as weak as your head. Believe me, mind will tear you apart (esp when inlaws come to play) but LOVE will never will. Always, treasure your love and feed it like there is no tomorrow. LIFE is short and that's all I have to say.
Congratulation to your engagement and GL to the life ahead of you.

The BAT gear is hands above what is being suggested except for perhaps the VTL, its a level above the Dodd which as you know is indeed nice stuff which I have alot of experience with. The Manley is excellent but the Shrimp just not quite at the level of the BAT VK3i or varients. Still going to be tough to hit that one grand mark though. Anyway I think the Shrimp would be best if you cannot get the BAT, you will be getting quality gear, not having to deal with some cheap **** potentionmeter with a remote and the Manley is all built to high quality standards by folks interested in high quality sound who do not need to cut corners.

Many of BAT pre's have an abundance of single ended outputs on the preamp, I know nobody likes there baby called ugly but BAT is truly hi-fi. However, do not be suprised if you get some BAT gear you may just find yourself becoming a fully balanced person, not a bad thing for someone about to tie the knot.

I think I am going to buy the preamp here: http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?preatube&1230594386&/Bat-Balanced-audio-VK-3i-w/-ph

Any idea how much it would cost to get BAT to put a remote option on it?

I’d dispute the "hands above" the ModWright 9.0SE pre, even the early 9.0SE with Sonic caps. And I’ve had the BAT VK3i, Dodd MLP and VTL 2.5 in my rack. Now the SE BAT’s with the 6H30 tube is another animal.

IIRC, to have the remote option installed by BAT was ~$500, and that price is from a couple of years ago. The folks at BAT are dedicated to customer service, even if you were not the original buyer. Give them a call or send them an email to find out.

One word of caution with remote control BAT VK3i/5i’s, early builds (I cannot recall the serial number range) were susceptible to damage from static discharge at the front panel. (The volume goes fixed and way loud). That happened to my VK3i, and Vladimir at BAT repaired it and implemented static discharge protection found on the later units.

EDIT: The BAT phono card was also very good in the 3i.

Don't buy that BAT, you can find one with a remote for around $1200.00. BAT still charges $500.00 to install one.

Just make sure the BAT you get has the single ended output's you want, there are a few early models that were strictly balanced.

I have found that using components which are built with a totally balanced circuit hold one of the key's to a hi-fi system. Some manufacture's just put balanced outputs on a piece and call it a day, but you want the circuit balanced from the power supply throughout the component. Before balanced connectors became "vogue" in audio land quality components were still being built using a balanced circiut with single ended outputs.

Anyway, I would not rush into anything. Hopefully, you can get a new pre-amp first, but the risk is you never exactly know what you can sell the Dodd for.

Oh yeah, I forgot one!Steve Sammet owns SAS Audiolabs and builds stellar linestages.I owned the SAS 10A before the fire and it was super clean and very fast and musical and by far the best tube pre in my previous two channel rig including the VK3i and the Candela, it runs dual volume pots and Steve refuses to build one with a remote control but the sonics are top shelf ;)....WCW III www.sasaudiolabs.com
