Diagnose speaker distortion - MG-IIIa

I've owned a Magnepan MGIIIa speaker set for eighteen years. I had it stored for a little while and recently changed the cloth sock. When I set it up again, I noticed a distortion coming from the right channel speaker. The distortion is located in the 2 o'clock position and is approximately five inches in diameter; it mainly appears when there are bass sounds. I would like assistance in diagnosing this problem. Is this a problem that listeners have had after owning this speaker set for as long a time as I have? Is it something that I can take to the dealer to have repaired? Or, is it time to buy a new set of Magnepan speakers?

I had to send a pair of my Maggies back for rebuild about 3 years ago. They go the full route when redoing them. Needless to say I was shocked when they returned. It was like looking at a totally NEW pair of speakers. Money well spent.

The best place to ask this question would be at MUG - Magnepan User Group (check Google for exact URL address).

It's weird that you were able to identify that the distortion comes from a very specific spot - maybe the Mylar panel is damaged there?

Are the coils becoming unglued from the diaphragm? Second, is the diaphragm ruptured?

I've had issues with drivers having hairline ruptures in them that I wasn't able to see, even with the driver performing when distortion present. I think you do have a physical problem somewhere and Magnepan CS should be able to point you in the right direction; whether that is replacement or otherwise.
