The panel is on a cinderblock wall as this was a garage at one time the meter is just on the other side of panel area. The worse would be to extend the sub panel wiring over, which is just below main panel about 12". Not a hard job it's just pulling the meter thing, which is where I'm not comfortable with.

Pulling the meter is easy. Clip the little tamper wire seal, and pull the meter straight out. That is the easiest part. Once the meter is out you will have no juice in the panel. You should shut off all the breakers before doing this, The same before installing the meter. I wish I were closer. Painting, computer , and electrical problems. With the short run to the panel life is good. All the household circuit wires accessible?

It could be construed by your utility as current diversion if you clip that seal. Just FYI...

I would NOT follow ben's advice on pulling the meter. The next time the utility company comes around, they will see the clipped seal and assume you were stealing service.
    Ludicrous gibs!

Nope you tell them that you had a bad main breaker;)
Been there done that. They may gripe a little, but they will get over it;)
    Ben

Edit: Long story short. Unless you know somebody who knows what they are doing don't try this at home!
Edit Edit: Nadams you realize to steal power you have to jump those big blades. I have a few times, but it can be a real bad thing. Just call the next day, adn say you had to do it that evening.

Well like I stated already I may leave that to some one else. Now saying that if push came to shave and that main breaker acted up again I may have to do what I need to do. Then call.

But for the record what do "Electricians" do with the meter feed if something needs to be change out on that end? I wouldn't think the electric company would come out to pull meter then reinstall or would they?

We just cut the tab, and call saying we needed to change the main breaker;) No problem:) As for changing the meter depending on where you are sometimes the Elec company owns the can.

The power company owns the service to the meter.

I don't know every state mandate but meters have to be pulled by the power company on existing service. We had a meter actually explode just 24 hours ago for no apparent, or on-site reason....think it's safe? Do you want to be THAT person?

Do what you want, I don't care as its not my house or responsibility. If you came here to even ask about this issue, you should have your head examined.

It is not unsafe to pull the meter. This was my job for many years. It is not illegal. If you have a problem with the main breaker you need to pull the meter to replace the breaker, or you will be at serious risk.

I not going to do anything with the panel as my list is pretty long already and someone said they would for X already.

But I think Ben had a good idea before now getting crazy. I don't think having meter switched out as the based I'm sure is different because of the 3 Ph thing. But if replaced just removing the high leg feed and rewire as a normal house would be a bad idea if done. IMHO

The power company owns everything up to, and including the meter. You shouldn't advocate doing things just because you did them previously. Especially, since state law varies but that's just me.

    Here's the Maryland verbage....

    http://www.alleghenypower.com/CSC/Services/Pages/Section9.pdf

    "The Company
prohibits the breaking of Company seals by unauthorized
persons, or tampering with meters or with any wiring
equipment located ahead of the meter."

Agree, but what was my first post just a question about 3 phase, at best I was just going to replace a breaker. But then got an education on AC power thanks to Wes and Ben, now we are talking about doing stuff I'm not comfortable with and is illegal perhaps.

Then it all becomes Grey area because the wiring we're talking about is after the meter. But then again start at meter.

Well you can see my uncomfortableness about meters and all up to main breaker.

For me it doesn't matter since I'm touching the globe. You can absolutely do what Ben is saying but that's at your own risk. One slip and you're dead due to negligence.

I'm out, yank meters, pull on wires...whatever, kill yourself for all I care. Good luck and happy listening.
