Scored a pair of Studio SDA 1Cs, My brother picked them up for me in Southern Cal so its a road trip next weekend.

Also scored a Carver TFM-28.

Now to get it all home and setup.

Once I get everything in Texas I will post some pictures.

If I may ask, where did you score them from and how long ago? Ebay or Craigslist? Reasonable price? Just curious. I'm pulling my hair out here looking for a pair of SDA's and live in So Cal. Congrats by the way!!!

FB, I was thinking of you knowing you are on the hunt as bad as me.

This guy had 3 pairs but I think the other 2 pairs are A1s

Craigslist, not a great price but a good price, no IC but that was not a deal breaker.

I called about these and found out he had the 1Cs. He has been running this ad for a while and has now lowered his price to $400. He has the IC for these but just one set. Steve seems like a nice guy. He does not have his number listed but if you shout me a PM I will give it to you.

... what's a TFM 28? I know the 24/25 and 42/45, 4.0T, but haven't seen the 28. If it has similar specs to the 25, it will be fine running the SDAs or the M12s.

Congrats thsmith! I had a brief email interaction with him. Seemed like a very cool individual and was willing to work with me. Unfortunately, I had to let it go cuz at the time I was having car issues and he didn't mention the "OTHER TWO PAIRS!!!!???!!!!"

There is no such animal. There is the CT-28 which is a preamp and a TFM-25 which is a amp but no TFM-28

Congrats on your new SDA's! I am certainly not an SDA expert but, those pictured in the ad look identical to the original SDA 1's I picked up a few months ago for $200. Sl 1000 tweeters,Walnut veneer and B/B interconnect. Nice speakers that really benefitted from the RDO 194 upgrade.

Those are NOT 1C's. Those are very early (perhaps) 1st generation SDA 1's with sl1000 tweeters. Not worth $400 (IMO).

Good catch anonymouse...............BTW I still have your 1C's and they still sound absolutely fantastic :)

Agree those in the link are not 1Cs, seller had 3 pairs of SDAs, I bought the Studio 1Cs that he is not advertising. I posted the link for Fatbrain who is looking for some SDA in SOuthern Cal, he asked where in Southern Cal I got the 1Cs so I was just providing the link for him.

He listened to them at the sellers and said they sounded good even without the IC. He inspected the cabinets top to bottom and underneath and said the MW would come out when pushing on the PR then go half way in and stay that way until releasing the PR.

Should have them in Texas this time next week.

I guess I could post my trip and see if any speakers needed to be dropped off:cool:

Sounds like it's all good then. I don't envy you the drive, but I think you'll be happy with the result. I get goose bumps every so often when I'm listening to mine.

I made the to trip to Phoenix a couple of years ago for this. Hope the SDAs are in better shape;)


He has a Bose system so I did not ask him to hook them up.

Ordered the upgraded tweeters for the SDA 1Cs - (4) 194s this morning. They should be here by the time I get back from picking up the SDAs.

You won't regret the tweeter upgrade. I love my 1C with RD0s and rebuilt x-overs.

Be sure to listen to them with the SL2000s prior to putting in the 194s...for a point of reference. I'll be interested to read your comparison to the M12s as well with and w/o the amp.

Put 1Cs back in service with Carver and listen

Nah, put the amp on the M12s now...compare vs the Denon...report back. You won't want to take the amp out of the chain again. Get a good feel for how the M12s have improved. When you get back with the SDAs put them in the M12s place...get an idea. Switch back if you want, especially if they're close.

You're right about the cabinets. They might be a hybrid. They don't have the shorter screens and the kick plate on the bottom, but they also don't have the cloth sides. It's been noted that Polk released some 1Cs in 1B cabs, maybe they did something else with yours. I just hope they are in good enough shape that you don't have to do much or any refurbishment.

I think they are NOT regular studios. The Studios typically have a ~4" panel along the bottom and the top section is flush. The 1C pictured in this thread does not have the panel along the bottom, and the top is not flush on the front.

Honestly, they look a bit different than the usual real wood ones too. Usually with the real wood 1C, you can see the MDF cabinet top beneath the real wood top. On yours, I do not see this. Same with the bottom panel.

So, you might be getting a unique production model, possibly early or late in the chain.

Whether they are studios or painted wood, or some unique model, they are still a nice looking speaker and should sound great.

edited my post after taking a look. Yeah, they are a hybrid cabinet. Just clean up the drivers, replace the tweets and they will be fine.

I edited my post too. Ron, the 1C that are in 1B cabinets look pretty much like the Studio version, but in woodgrain vinyl. I really think these are something unique.

Tracy sent me more pics earlier and I looked. They are 1C cabs with the top and bottom overhang, but have the wood grained sides. They look in good shape to me. Yep, they are unique. I wonder if they are stock? Maybe, Ken can speak to that.

Those babies look fantastic! I love black speakers but you're right, they aren't the typical "studio" version. They are something much better...
