How many buttons to hear music?

My wife bugs me all the time (and laughs) at all the buttons I need to turn on to listen to music. So, I was wondering, how many buttons do YOU need to touch before music plays? Count ONE source and include the volume control and the "play" button in your addition. I figure the minimum must be 3, one power button that turns everything on, one for play and one for volume.

Here is my typical "turn on" sequence to hear music on my main system:

Step:

Monster Power ON (turns on 1 amp also)
2nd Monster Power ON
Power bar ON
2nd Power bar ON
Pre-amp ON
DVD player ON
Amp 1 ON
Amp 2 ON
Amp 3 ON
Amp 4 ON
Amp 5 ON
Amp 6 ON
Amp 7 ON
Raise volume on AMP 1
Raise volume on Amp 2
Raise volume on Amp 3
Raise left and right volume on Amp 4
Raise left and right volume on Amp 5
Raise left and right volume on Amp 6
Raise left and right volume on Amp 7
Press play on DVD player
Turn up volume on Pre-amp

Hmmmm, 26 moves later, I hear music. No wonder my wife thinks I'm crazy.

And it takes 26 moves in the reverse order to shut down.

I like my stuff on 24/7

So -- turn knob to CD (if it is not already on CD)

    Then press play...

    Turn up volume

2 knob turns and 1 button

    Now if cold starting --

Thatd be four power buttons, then do the above sequence.

NOt paying the electric bill I'm guessing?

So when you're at work.. or away.. guessing you work 8 hours a day X 365 days a year, that ='s 2920 hours of wasted electricity that could be saved.

I know lots of people do the same.. but seriously.. you're using power that is being used up when you're away, that children in a poor third world country might need. :p

    Let's see...

    1 for the Power strip
    1 for the amp
    1 for the pre
    1 to push play

With my old rig, all I had to do was turn on the power strip & everything came on. Not so with the new amp and pre.

    I guess I'll live.

It's better than pushing 26! But I bet there's just something a bit satisfying when you do that, Joe?

Well, put it this way....nobody touches my stuff because they can't even turn it on. That's why there's an upstairs system...pre/power/play and you're done.

Oh yes, I did wire it so that my wife or daughter can use the dvd player to watch movies on the big t.v.....but through the t.v. speakers only.

One button on my Harmony remote does all of that.

Ditto. Actually, its one button to turn it all on, or one button for whatever you want to do (Play XBox360, Play SACD, Play HD-DVD, etc.)
I don't have my CD player set to autoplay, so that would be an extra button click.

My amp, which does not have remote capability, turns on by way of the remote switching feature. I have a small 12v AC adapter plugged into the remote AC outlet on my Onkyo which switches my amp on an off.

With the Harmony, you can program scripts to do just about whatever you want it to do after the stuff is on. So you could have it press play for you, if you so desired. I don't bother because I typically have to still put the CD I want to listen to in anyway.

For my HT system, just 1 button on my Harmony remote and whatever is in the CD player will come on in a couple seconds.

Oh and for Volume-well I have my Onk set to a specific turn-on volume, but you really can't count volume adjustment as a click. Its a givin that you'll likely adjust the volume. And if you do it with a knob....no clicks ;)

Why do you have to adjust the volume on each of your amps separately?

You need a high current power strip with trigger capability.

Harmony 1000 programmed to start all up with one command / button. Then one button to start the CD player. From there the remote acts as the CD remote or the pre amp remote. You control the volume and discs from the same screen. One button / command to switch to a Movie or game. The Harmony 1000 isn't the best I am told but it sure is easy to program and work. Even the wife can operate it.

Lets see...power conditioners help a LOT with their delayed automated switching for the power amps...other components arent delayed but come on with the conditioner buttons....so.....actually ....8 for me for music in the living room.

Mancave would be 5 button pushes for music.

Depends on the source, for cd, the power on the harmony then I need to hit eject and load the cd then close, so that's 3 then play then adjust the volume. Same goes for DVD, the only ones that are fast are watch TV and play PS3.

My 2 channel rig is diff from my HT rig. No automation at all yet.

Turn on the CDP if using it / Squeezebox Duet is always on
    Turn on the Pre/select source/unmute
    Turn on the amp
Then Play / Select music and enjoy.
