Did it start after driving them loud? Perhaps you fried a tweeter (or started to)?
    Or are they new?

Does it smell like cigarettes, pot, a campfire, Aunt Betty's burnt toast, etc.?

Seriously, I'll bet your smelling the sweet smell of new electronics. Of course, I never thought that smelled like smoke, but every nose is different.

I kinda like that new electronics smell. They should make a Glade in that flavor.

Every smelly thread always turns out to be funny :D. Seriously, my Rti10’s smell after almost a year. I can live with it. A saw a few Rti owners on this forum that had that kind of stinky problem.

If something had burned, such as a resistor, the smell can linger. I would pull the crossover board and at least look to see if anything is burned. If not I would pull each driver/tweeter and smell them to see what the source is or where in the speaker its coming from.

Here's a shot at an XO with a burned resistor (bottom middle). Note this pic is from Ben's XO upgrade project and so in the pic he already started breaking the old resistor off.

You can check the tweeters by listening to them through a piece of tube, such as from an old kitchen roll, or even a vacuum cleaner pipe. This isolates the sound better from the main drivers and should help you to compare what you are hearing. If you fried a tweeter, you need to examine your listening levels and consider a different receiver and/or extra amplification IMO.

If it is that "new speaker smell", I've heard of people opening them up and just leaving them in the garage for a week or so to get some circulation through them. It usually takes care of the problem.
