Boy Toting Obama Sign Zapped During Attempted Sign Switch
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Shawn Turschak of Chapel Hill was tired of someone stealing McCain-Palin campaign signs from his yard. Turschak, with a degree in electrical engineering, hooked up a third sign to a power source for an electric pet fence Monday and also put up a surveillance camera.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that a 9-year-old boy with an Obama-Biden sign grabbed the McCain-Palin sign and got a jolt on Tuesday.
The boy's father, Andrew Noble, upset that his son had been shocked, showed up at Turschak's door. Soon an Orange County sheriff's deputy also showed up at the Turschak's home.
Noble said his son just wanted to see how the sign was put together. Turschak said the boy intended to swap out the signs.
Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass said he doesn't plan to file charges.

Something tells me if the political affiliation was switched, there might be a little more outrage over electrocuting a NINE YEAR OLD. Just a hunch.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Zapping with a pet fence (which are of course designed so they won't seriously hurt anyone, since they sit out in public and could be stumbled upon by anyone) isn't quite the same as ELECTROCUTING.
It's more tantamount to having one of those fake doorbells that shocks you.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

Okay... maybe not electrocution, but I'm still trusting my instincts here. I think after reading a trillion threads, it's pretty easy to determine the leanings of the majority of members. Just a observation.

Methinks you are correct, fine sir.
I do think, however, that there's something fundamentally wrong with a 9 year old (or anyone, for that matter), taking down someone else's political signs. Champion your candidate, but don't mess with someone else's. Kinda impinges on the whole first amendment thing..Wristwatch--->Crisco -

Actually, I think the switched party affiliation outrage would be over forcing a nine year old child to run through peoples' yards snatching signs. -
My Dad would have marched me over to that guy's house and made me apologize. then he would have asked the guy if he needed his lawn cut or any other yard work because apparently his son has nothing productive to do an needs to burn off some energy.
. . . and that's how at 11 I started my little landscape business. -

Going on the presumption that Jason was refering to the outrage heard here from our Club Polk bretheren if it were McCain signs being taken down, I'd have to disagree with you on that one.Wristwatch--->Crisco -

I think the whole political system is a joke anyways..
All I see are negative ads on my tv about other candidates.
And I never understood the reasoning behind putting up political signs in your yard.

I don't think this is an issue of politics. It's an issue of a kid doing something wrong and his Dad condoning it.

Sign stealing is a huge problem here in Seattle. (And I don't see any Obama signs disappearing) There is a guy who lives near my house, and he put McCain signs in his lawn for a while, but they kept being stolen. Then he starting putting them in his tree but they also disappeared. Last week he got fed up and put it on top of his house. One night a neighbor saw someone up there stealing the sign. Call me weird, but you should be free to express your political views, no matter what side of the fence you're on...

Happened to me too, we shut the power off on the resturant around the corner...I think my butt still hurts. We must not have apologized well enough, because both my brother and I had the wife of the couple that owned it for our sixth-grade teacher...worst year of school I ever had. -

Oh yes. Humans are extremely pack-minded creatures, and believing you're doing what the majority of your kinfolk are doing is a huge part of that. I mean, you're talking about people who are otherwise not strongly leaning towards either candidate, of course. Some die-hard Repub isn't going to vote for Obama just because he saw some signs. But there are millions and MILLIONS of people who just don't care about politics but vote anyway, and those people certainly vote on name recognition or out of some misplaced idea that it will help them fit in.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
About stealing signs - Locally it is actually against the law to put a sign in a public right of way (including the right-of-way in your yard). So our mayor instructs the sanitation department to "keep our city clean" amazingly, they always seems to miss his signs. Its great, the news will even show them dismantle the opposition sign (the big, big signs) that is right next to the mayor's sign. Leave the mayor's sign and drive off. It has been this way for the last 4 mayorial elections.

If that was in Texas, his **** wouldve gotten shot off the roof.
I'm a republican. If this story was about a kid stealing obama signs and putting mccain signs in its place, I would not feel any other way.
1. The kid was trespassing.
2. The kid was stealing.
3. The kid gets condoned by his dad for it.
I wish the guy wouldve recorded him taking it first, put another one in, then hooked it up with the pet fence.
So if I have a dog fence in my backyard and some little punk comes and touches it, I'm liable? Same damn thing.

Yup.
The guy didnt go over to the kids house and zap him, the kid came into the guys yard.
The bottom line is that if the little brat wasnt trespassing and attempting vandalize someones property, he never wouldve gotten zapped!polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

The kids father should spend more time being a real father and instill proper values such as do not trespass and perhaps teach the son what should have been learned at a much younger age such as do not touch what is not yours.Technics SL1210mkll / AT125LC / Cambridge Audio 640P / Yamaha TX-950 / Onkyo TA-2600 / Yamaha C-80 pre/Adcom GFA 545 / Polk Audio Monitor 12 Series 2
