First of all, the player is from an unlikely source....LG.

Here're the details

But that's the Australian LG site, not the US. While the US gets the LG BD300, the US LG site doesn't mention anything about SACD.

Odd, I would expect a universal player to also play DVD-A. Hopefully Oppo will get out their BD-83 soon.

The Ps3 is a Sacd player which only streams Sacd over HDMI. So its really the first Blu ray player with Sacd.

Interesting I bought the PS3 because it was the cheapest blu-ray and SACD player out there.

Guess there were more features lost in the new 80G model than the ps2 backward compatibility.

I didn't know any of this. So the new ones drop the ability to play SACD ?? Huh. It's Sony's format. But SACD isn't supported. It never became main stream. I hate it but the Truth be told.

I don't remember the actual years, models, etc. But there is a website that breaks it down. Just put "sacd and PS3" into google and it will be there.

yes, I was on the market for a new PS3 and I was waiting for the 80g version thinking I was going to get the same as the original (SACD supported) version and after much waiting and searching. the new PS3 was not what they advertise on sony's website. After all these months I am still waiting for a good BR player.
At this point I don't know what to buy.
I am very happy with my new pioneer DV-48A, which is just a dvd but it is very good at upscalling and it generates very good sound.
I agree I can spend $1200 -$2000 and get something really good. but who am I kidding, I don't have that kind of money and as fast as these components are changing, I just don't see my self buying something so expensive.

Don't need the chart. Every ps3 except the 40GB supported SACD and some form of ps2 backwards compatibility.

The problem is, the new 80GB currently available is just a 40GB with a new 80GB hdd tacked on. So basically it's the same model with only a variation in the amount of storage space. I think they will have some sort of Drakes Fortune bundle with a 160GB drive, but again, IIRC, it's the same 40GB model with a new hard drive. Maybe Sony will support Blu-ray's high resolution PCM audio only disks instead. Seems like a no brainer since ALL blu-ray players support this format not just Sony's stuff...it would be nice if they started releasing more albums in this format.
