Update! I went to the orthapedic surgeon this morning and without an MRI he thinks that I tore both the miniscus and the acl. I will have the MRI next week. He is starting me on PT and told me to stop wearing the brace. I was cleared to drive to PF but will not make the decesion untill tomorrow when I see how the pain is with the brace off. I am feeling like I will make the trip.

Sucks, dude. I've been kinda musing about getting back into a Friday night indoor soccer league after years of not playing. I used to totally love it, and was always lucky that my knees held up when other guys blew theirs out. Maybe not so much now.

    Thanks for the reality check.

Update!!!! just spoke to my orthopedic doc and the results of my MRI is that i compleatly tore my ACL. He does not see any other damage to the MCL or the miniscus. I have an appointment with him on thursday and he said he will evaluate how the physical therapy is working and decide if i need to repair it. Hopefully I wont need surgury.

    Fireman32,

I blew my knee at 42 trying to stay in shape with Sat am basketball. I should have stayed at home and had an extra donut and coffee.:o

For a little reference, I was still very active and athletic and could not imagine having the "loose" knee the rest of my life. It frequently collapsed when trying to play golf, walking on uneven surfaces, and just stepping over things. So,I started pre-op physio, building the quads and supporting tissues of the knee before surgery. That definitely helped post-op and I had full range of motion within three months post-op. I had a hammy graft that is less invasive that a patella graft.

Here is BB site that helped me tremendously with first hand info and stories. Good Luck.

    Dave,
If you are an active guy who likes playing sports and outdoorsy types of things, you will definitely want to get it repaired. If you are not that active and are the "weekend warrior" type, you may be able to get away with PT and a brace when doing strenuous things. If you'd like some advice, PM me. I have worked in sports med for the past 15 years and have a great deal of experience rehabbibg ACL's. In any case, good luck with whatever you decide and I wish you the best.

    Take Care,
    Shawn

If you do this, please film it?

The look on Dave's face as Russ, smoldering cigarette hanging from his bottom lip and a wild look in his eyes tosses Dave by his collar right down the stairs then takes a drag from the cigarette and says "Told ya so!" in a southern drawl would be totally worth the price of admission!

Russ, if you do this and you need some visual props like a Marlboro T-shirt or a John Deere hat, let me know and I'll overnight some supplies to you!

Well the date is set January 5th I will be going under the knife to get my ACL repaired. They said the procedure takes about 90 minutes and then I get to start the recovery process all over again. I also got released from physical therapy today. I can walk without crutches for now so that makes life much easier for me. Thanks again to everyone for all the support.

    Dave,
Do yourself a favor and see if your insurance will cover a CPM (continuous passive motion) machine. It helps a great deal in getting your range of motion back following surgery, which is the #1 thing to focus on in the initial 4-6 weeks of recovery. PM me if you need anything man. Good luck; it'll be a breeze.

    Take care,
    Shawn

    Fireman32,
I just now noticed this post. I feel ya bro. I did about the same thing playing football some years back. I had surgery to repair a completely blown ACL and 3 rips on my miniscus.
A word of encouragement...when it is all said and done...it is not that bad. Now my knee is great. I still get nervous playing B-ball with my kids, but it is holding up well.
When you stop and think of all the pain and suffering going on out there in this world we live, our injury is a minor thing.
Do not get me wrong, it will be sore afterward...but that is why they make pain pills.
A word of advice...the 1st few nights after the surgery...when you sleep...wear the brace they will provide. Trust me.
Hope it all goes well. God bless.
