Blew out my knee

On tuesday night I met up with some of my co-workers who joined a co-ed kickball league and plays against other business in research triangle park. I joined figuring it would be fun meet some new people and get some exercise. Now I havent played kickball since I was in grade school. It started out good enough I got to be up twice and was having a good time.

3rd inning I was playing left field and the ball was grounded to me. I picked up the ball and was running while throwing it to 2nd base to get the runner out. When my right foot came down it twisted and felt two pops in my right knee and went down like a sack of bricks. I limped off the field and iced my knee for the rest of the game. Once I got home the pain was too much for me and I decided to go to the ER to get checked. I had my neighbor drive me and they took x-rays and told me nothing was broken but they feel like I tore my miniscus in my knee.

They put in a huge leg sprint and gave me crutches. I have an appointment on tues morning with the orthopedic surgeon to see what he thinks and probably get a MRI. Hopefully its just a bad sprain and I can make it to PF next week. I will leave it up to the DR.

I guess im getting old:(

Way to go Dave now you can start limping like the rest of us old atheletes.

Really though sorry to hear of your mishap and hope the tears aren't going to require much surgery.

    ouch...yeah the X-ray won't show crap..
you will need to get an MRI..and they aint cheap..but if you have insurance, you should definately get that checked out.

It sounds like it may be an ACL injury with the popping sound...

I'm guessing your knee is the size of a bowling ball by now?

No matter what, I pray you don't need surgery.

Knee surgery has come a long way, but it's still not fun. Feel better.

I sprained my ACL when I was 22 (now 38) with no insurance...but the ortho could tell by just moving the knee which ligament was sprained..I never got surgery because it wasn’t a complete tear and Im not a pro athlete, but I did wear a knee brace when playing sports for a long time. I ended up having some slight meniscus damage 5 years ago (probably from the inital injury) and got an MRI 5 years at that time to finally see what damage I had…wasn’t too bad…..But ACLs don't heal so if you totally tore yours, you will need surgery..

I'm guessing your knee is the size of a bowling ball by now?

    Good luck!

My best friend and I have had two arguments the entire time we have known each other. That's close to two decades. Both arguments were when he had just had knee surgery. May God bless those who are around you if you have to get it done and prayers are being sent that you don't have to get it done bro'.

I dislocated both my knee caps in hs playing football...different times, but both in my senior year...also had 1 semi serious concussion and 3 minor concussions following that.

im only 22 but my knees kill me sometimes, about once or twice a year to the point I just have to sleep it off for the night. especially during weather changes or when its about to rain. I was about 90 percent accurate on knowing if I was going to rain the next day without ever looking at the forecast...lol.

Im dreading what its going to be like 20 years down the road.

I wish you a speedy recovery and hopefuly you don't ever have any problems like I do

Oh man, sorry about your injury. Been there. My wife is in the health care industry and and said you are gonna be fine with the high tech surgeries nowadays.

    Best Wishes.

Sorry to hear about your injury. It is most likely a torn ACL and grade 2 or 3 MCL injury. It is also possible to have bone bruising and/or meniscus damage. These injuries are very common and surgery is pretty routine. You will have a choice of what you would like to replace the ACL with. The "gold standard" way of doing it is using patellar tendon, the advantage of this method is bone to bone healing which is faster than muscle to bone healing of the other two methods. The disadvantage of this is possible arthritis or knee pain in the future. The other two methods are using a portion of your hamstring which is harvested to create the graft or using hamstring from a cadaver. The advantage is far less risk for knee pain later on, the disadvantage is hamstring weakness if you don't properly rehab for an extended period of time.

I tore my ACL and had a grade 2 MCL injury with slight bone bruising and virtually no meniscus damage 3.5 years ago. I had the hamstring surgery with my hamstring which was very successful. I am an athlete and rehabed it intensely. I played college tennis 8 months after surgery. It took 2 years to regain all of the strength and confidence I had before the injury. It is a long and painful recovery but it can be done if you want it to get done. The first week will be no walking and the first 3 months can be hellish but once it has healed enough to allow jogging and light weight training strength returns fast.

Hopefully you don't have to deal with any of this but if you do at least you have an idea what to expect.

I haven't really mentioned to anyone but Steve and Bill at CP, but I had Achilles surgery on the 11th of September. Turned out I had bone spurs and calcification embedded in the Achilles. Podiatrist had to cut the center of the Achilles to get it out of there. I haven't been able to do any significant, pain-free running in months.

It's heeling well (pun intended) so so far so good.

If they give you a nerve blocker for the surgery and only sedate you, take the pain killers like 3-4 hours before when they tell you the nerve blocker will wear off, TRUST ME! :( Felt like my heel was in a vice and Bubba put all his weight on it to tighten it down.

If you don't make it to PF....you've dropped a few pegs in my playbook. I'm sure that between your physician and the rest of these older, decrepit Polkies, the medications have already been prescribed for their trips.

We could just play Poker for meds.....plus the endless supply of Red Bull and Jagermeister might help that knee right up.

Well at least I was man enough to admit it.:D Alot of nice looking girls on the team dragged me in. I stayed home and iced the knee all weekend but its still nice and swollen and I can barley walk. I see the orthapedic surgeon tomorrow morning will see what he says. As of right know I dont think there is any way I can make the drive to PF.

Update! I went to the orthapedic surgeon this morning and without an MRI he thinks that I tore both the miniscus and the acl. I will have the MRI next week. He is starting me on PT and told me to stop wearing the brace. I was cleared to drive to PF but will not make the decesion untill tomorrow when I see how the pain is with the brace off. I am feeling like I will make the trip.
