Polkies, I could use some advice on upgrading my sub. I would like a MUSICAL sub that complements my Rti10's for two-channel listening. I don't care if it shakes the room when I watch movies. All I really want is to have better base when I listen to music. Is there anything out there that would suit my needs in the $500-700 range? Thanks in advance

Never heard it personally but did alot of reading on Epik subs and they're surpose to be great subs. I placed a order for the Epik Caliber but it's a 3 to 4 week wait on all their subs.

    Leroy,
Can you point me toward any reviews that you might have come across?

Do a search under epik on here. Theirs a couple people that gave their opinions and recommended EPIK. Also look in the avs forum and do a search. Theirs plenty of info to help you on your decision. If you need any links hit me up. Another reason I chose Epik is I can pick it up and save $100+ on shipping. My hardest decision was which sub to choose. I like many others want the biggest baddest sub, but I couldn't justify a 250 pound 18 inch sub in a 18x14 HT room

I'd like to piggyback on this question since I'm interested in knowing if Polk has anything to match an entry level sub like the Hsu STF-2 or the SVS PD-10 and I would also be interested in musicality.

I appreciate all of your advice. I guess most people who buy the Rti series are mainly going for HT, so I should not be surprised that the recs have been few.

    Here's what I got.

    http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_6_3/velodyne-ct-150-subwoofer.html

There is a few missprints on the HPLP cutoffs. he states the speaker in-out . line level is 24/18db electronic XO. Has 3db headroom=675w peaks. Great for bass, drums/ organs/harps. Flip the +5db "movie" switch on and it will make you GFs chest look like a bobble-head doll. On Jurrasic Park, you can feel and smell the dino's breath. Find one used...

M&K and Velodyne started out in the sub bidness originally...

Anyone heard of these guys? There was a thread about them over on AVS on the same theme (musical subwoofer).

Here is how they explain it on their blurb page:

Can a subwoofer reproduce bass as accurately as high end speakers?

Our products are ideally suited to those who feel subs just don’t cut it when it comes to music. Perhaps past experience has led you to believe this is the case. Or perhaps you have bought subwoofer and been disappointed with what it did to your music.

It is with good reason that many hifi salesmen will tell you as if it is a fact that subwoofers are for home theatre only. The reason is that they don’t have any subwoofers that are accurate enough to reproduce music. They probably haven’t heard any that can reproduce music with accuracy either.

One thing is clear – anyone who believes subwoofers are not suited to music has not heard a Rythmik Audio Direct Servo subwoofer.

Our subwoofers achieve a level of accuracy that is not possible with conventional subwoofer technology. This may sound like a bold claim, but we encourage you to examine our site. You will find that this is not sales hype, but it is in fact the only logical conclusion. Our technology section gives a background to how we achieve such a high level of accuracy.

One of the guys from Audioholics invited me over awhile back to listen to his Rythmik Servo 12. He built his own box and did a nice job. Like the Velodyne DDs, it's impossible to make the sub sound bad. Controlled and extremely musical, it adds, but never dominates the way he had his setup. Compared to large ported box or cylinder subs, it's not as visceral, but it digs below 20hz and does sound great, no distortion, no overhang. The big Velos have more impact, but sport very powerful 1250w amps vs 350w (also cost a ton more). From what I heard and from what I've read about the new 15" kit, it's a great sub.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

I found an easy to read article that helped a newbie like me understand some of the issues

I don't want to go the dual sub route, but at least I know why some people go that route.

Not all that helpful IMHO: it basically says it can't be done! Some receivers can probably compensate for this by allowing for automatic adjustment of the subwoofer level when the CD, or other music playing source, is selected. Hmmm ...

Kex, I'm just saying that the logic seems reasonable even if it is pessimistic: If a speaker plays at a high enough freq then someone with a good ear will hear the lack of stereo. Luckily for me I don't have a very good ear.
