Now that my 2-channel rig is complete, I've moved on to another money draining hobby. I just purchased a Nikon D40. I have no experience with photography, but it'll be fun to play around with it. Now I gotta eventually buy the accessories -- zoom lens, tripod, flash, blah, blah, blah.... And guess what -- sold some audio stuff to partially fund the purchase. I must be crazy!

I never had any interest in photography, but my sister is a professional photographer, my brother uses a digital cam in his graphics biz, and my best friend just jumped into the hobby. Hell, at a minimum, I wanna be able to speak the lingo.

George -- I proved it once before - I said I wouldn't upgrade my speakers for a year and I didn't. Still got 'em, too. Now I'm sayin' the whole system stays for a year. So I'm gonna dig up this thread in a year and talk trash to you, George. I'm placing bets. What are the odds?

Now you can take really nice pics of your audio gear unlike those idiots on some auction site including me. I can never seem to get it right the first time :D

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Nah. I'm upgrading because I wanted a built-in motor, larger body, and more features than the D40 offered. Besides, I got such a great deal on a barely used D80 that the upgrade only cost me an additonal $50 after selling my D40.

What I think you don't realize is it's like time. You can avoid it, take med's and try to out run it, see doctors and get advise on how to prolong it but in the end it's like a Predator........ it will get you. It's just a matter of time.

    Yeah good luck running.

I've been looking for tripods all day.

I bought a Manfrotto 725B a few weeks ago, but I really want something more robust, so it's up for sale. The cost to upgrade is about the same for a decent aluminum tripod as it is for an entry level carbon fiber one. Of course, the brand names are much more costly. On the other hand, perhaps I should trade up slightly, then get a higher quality tripod later on. Three hundred or more for a tripod is not in the budget right now.

What brand and model do you guys use?

I bought a Slik Pro 700 tripod (legs only) and Manfrotto head for less than $130. The Slik is $100 at B&H Photo. It will hold up to 15lbs. Solid and very stable.

    557127.jpg

Manfrotto heads are the best way to go IMO. I opted to not use a ballhead and really don't like all of the levers on most pan heads. I also don't care much for the quick release heads either. Saw a guy destroy a Canon 30D once when he accidently released the camera. OOOOOPPPS!

This is the one I bought and it works well for me. Bogen / Manfrotto 3025 3-D Head. $30 at B&H
