surprisingly engaging and interesting story. Acting is actually not bad at all, and the Hillbilly's small town setting seem to work well. I found myself glued to the storyline and can't wait for next week episode.

Anyone watch it last night?
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Being a lifetime resident of the South and having frequently traveled to Louisiana, I think the accents are WAY over the top. Some are good - Anna Paquin's is better here than in X-Men - but the girl playing Tara is overdoing it, as are others. Even in the most coon-**** parts of Louisiana, you won't find accents this stereotypically hillbilly. (Before anyone thinks that's a racist term, "coon-****" is a common name for thick-accented cajuns. Don't freak on me.)

Still, it's an intriguing show so far. Very well written, and I can't wait for next week's episode.

but that Tara character is funny as hell! her smartalec snaps were funny and matched her character really well. I was lol when she had that conversation with the guy sitting on the bar, and the whole exchanged with the transvestite cook....priceless.

How about the "going down" scene? I wasn't expecting that at all...and the S&M Vampire style. Definitely another series to keep, story buildup is actually slightly better than Deadwood.

    Nielsen Notebook
'True Blood’ Scares Up Modest Debut Audience
HBO's Vampire Series Premiere Night Cumes 2.1 Million Viewers
By R. Thomas Umstead, Multichannel News - September 9, 2008

Home Box Office took a decent bite out of the Sunday night television audience, drawing 2.1 million combined viewers for its Sept. 7 premiere of vampire-tinged original series True Blood.

The Allan Ball-produced series debuted at 9 p.m. with 1.4 million viewers, with a repeat 10:30 p.m. airing drawing an additional 700,000 viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research data. The series stars Anna Paquin as a southern cocktail waitress who falls for a 173-year-old vampire (portrayed by Stephen Moyer) against the backdrop of the discovery of a new synthetic drink that allows vampires to walk among humans without craving their blood.

While the series drew more viewers than the 910,000 that tuned into the September 2007 premiere of Tell Me You Love Me, it fell short of other HBO series premieres such as Big Love (4.5 million), Rome (3.8 million) and John From Cincinnati (3.4 million)

The pay TV service’s Hollywood comedy series Entourage performed slightly better, averaging 1.6 million viewers during its 10 p.m. Sunday season-five premiere, according to Nielsen. That number, however was down 25% from the 2.2 million viewers the network averaged during Entourage’s June 17, 2007 season four premiere.

Btw, how does Nielsen figured out the viewers number? This is always boggles me since I don't know how they come up with these figures? enlighten me, please?

I kinda felt a bit like I was slumming as I watched True Blood. :D

Still, the whole production seems to be done with a wink acknowledging that this is not Masterpiece Theater. I'll be tuning in next week to see where it goes from here. ;)

They give special cable boxes to people who represent certain demographics, and then extrapolate numbers based on that small sample set.

They also have "surveys" where people fill out a journal indicating what they watched, but those are notoriously inaccurate.

Check out the Wikipedia article for more info.

Anna Paquin kept me watching for the first episode, and now I'm hooked. Entourage is looking good as well.

I tried to like this series, but like anything else with vampires it gets a little bit too campy for me. It's a well put together series though like most HBO series. Entourage for life though ;p

I've been surprisingly hooked on this series too. I'm hoping they dive more into the vampire side of things and explore those characters...more dark and bloody vampire violence can't be a bad thing either! Especially pairing it with the raunchy sex and nudity they've got going on so far.

I really like the show. I think it is way over the top, but that of course is the point. Not the typical story line. It's a really different take on a Vampire tale.
I love ALL of the music. I think the soundtrack producer deserves an Emmy!

We like this show. A different take on most vampire stories. I like the idea of the "mainstreaming" vamp. They are fighting for civil rights. It throws a lot of what ifs into the picture. For instance, if a vampire were to obtain a drivers license, they would need to take the road test at night... If a vampire worked for a employer with a pension retirement, would they get paid forever? :)

We had a free HBO/Cinemax weekend last week and I got to watch about 9-10 episodes of the first season(on Demand HD) and I liked it(I'm a "GOOD" vampire story junkie). It started out a little slow, but picked up nicely. When I get my finances in order, I'm going to add HBO again, so I can catch up with this and "Big Love" and Showtime, too so I can catch up on "Dexter", "Weeds", and "The Tudors".
