rt400

Just bought a set of rt400's with a Sony receiver.

One of the speakers sounds great, and I love it.

The catch, though, is that the other one sounds like crap. It sounds like someone's blowing into a mic during the recording or tapping on it.

And speakers work best in pairs.

I know this is really vague and probably helps you not at all, but if anyone has any ideas or good questions to ask I'd appreciate it greatly.

Matt

First isolate if its the speakers or the receiver.Do you have other speakers to test the reciever?Or another reciever to test the speakers.I would guess its a bad speaker.Swap the left/right to see if the problem follows.

It's the speakers for sure. I took off the covers and (this is the part where my inexperience will no doubt show itself) pushed down gently on the speaker itself. On the good one there was no sound but on the bad one there was a slight scratch in one area of the speaker.

I took off the screws to try to take it out of the casing but it doesn't seem to want to come out. I'm assuming it wasn't made to be removed.

I did also test the receiver with other speakers to make sure. 4 other sets sound fine.

Thanks for your help. I'll probably be on here soon enough asking for help installing it, if I can get one.

The driver for that model was discontinued.

    Lesson learned:

Test audio equipment before buying it used.

Contact KEN at polk.Call and ask for him and he should be able to provide you with a replacement that would work.

    +1

I know they make a substitute replacement. I've bought them before. You might have to change both drivers so they match.
