PSW111 Not working with Onkyo TX-SR604

I recently bought a brand new PSW111 Powered Subwoofer to go with an almost finished 7.1 setup. I bought a 6ft monster subwoofer cable and plugged to the back of my Onkyo TX-SR604 receiver just to find that there is no sound coming off from it. I checked the settings on the receiver and the settings say that the subwoofer option set to yes. I am practically lost on what else to check. If anybody is an expert on the onkyo setups I would really appreciate any help.

My setup will be as follows.

Samsung 56 DLP 1080p
POLK CS2 Center Speaker
2 Monitor 70 Floorstanding Speakers
Polk PSW111 Power Subwoofer
4- Polk RC60i Sorround Speakers
2 Outdoor Atruium 60 for ZONE 2
Onkyo TX-SR604

I am almost done setting up everything. Just waiting for sometime to do the in-ceiling setups but I already have the wire on my attic.

Well I would need to verify that the sub works, then figure out why the LFE isn't working. So with the system off move the Sub connection to LFE to another output such as center, left, or right. If the sub works there then it must be a setting in the receiver.

Other then that Welcome to the club. :)

I see that Onk model doesn't have pre outputs, so my above should work with the tape out also for test proposes.

Re-run your Audyssey2EQ setup with the subwoofer connected and adjusted to mid level....if you ran that setup before and you didnt have a subwoofer connected, your L/C/R might still be setup as Fullband ( Onkyos wording for Large )and you wont hear much of anything from your sub.

Where as the Onkyo 605 had a way around that they called double bass...you could have the L/C/R set for Fullband and have the double bass on and the sub would get the low freq effects as well...hence " Double Bass ".....but your 604 doesnt have that capability .

Page 38 to 42 in your manual shows all this in great detail. Good luck.

Manually set your L/C/R to 80Hz and sub to YES if the calibration is fubar :) ( Onkyo clumps the L and the R together and calls them both " Front " fyi )

    Thanks for your suggestions:

OK. This is what I did. I got frustrated after working with it for almost 4 hours and found a way to reset my onkyo receiver to factory defaults. This method made the subwoofer work sound but it is very low even when I higher the volume on the subwoofer to MAX. Does not like sound like a normal woofer.
I do not have the Audyssey2EQ mic so I cannot run the setup.

^ Try turning on Double Bass setting in your Onkyo Menu. I had to do that with my 503, and it's just about perfect. The sub may not be sensitive enough to really do much without the boosted signal.
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

I looked at his 604 manual and there is no mention of the double bass feature....I used to have a 605 and Onkyo proudly mentions the double bass feature in that manual....but nothing for the 604.

Are you turning up the volume for the subwoofer PRE output in the Onkyo's setup ? Does that change the volume of the sub without touching the actual volume on the subwoofer itself ? Check that.....

If you haven't already done so, be sure to set your fronts to small, (then choose a crossover - 80Hz a would be a good place to start.
In the Setup Menu: You'll find this under Speaker Setup > Speaker Configuration
    LR Setup:
    Polk RTi10's, RTi6's, CSiA6 (5 ch setup)
    Onkyo 705 & Denon 3808ci Receiver, Onk 875
    Parasound 2250 Amp
Sony 26" KDL series Bravia LCD
    Panny DMR-EH75 Recorder
Panny DVD-F87 (5 disk DVD player)
    NAD T585 (DVD/SACD)
    Yamaha DVD-C961 (5 disk SACD/DVD)
    SciAnt Explorer 8500HD Cable Box
    Orig & 5Gen iPods, , Wii

    Plans/Fantasies:
    • 400 disk player that handles ALL formats, sounds as good as NAD with Panasonic interface & compatability.

OK I got a new cable from Best Buy. I looked at my receiver and did not find any setup option for Double bass so I took Xandra's option. I changed all my speakers to 80hz crossover and my subwoofer to 150mhz. I can notice a little improvement but nothing to what I expected. I previously owned a complete onkyo surround and it sounded 100% ouder than this polk sub woofer.

One last option I can think of:
Does the 604 have a "Tone" button on front?, If so, you can also use that to add more bass.
I previously owned a complete onkyo surround and it sounded 100% ouder

Not surprised at all to hear that, most low-end systems use bass to make up for lack of tonality, detail etc. No insult to Onk combo system (which is reputed to be particularly good) It's just one of the ways they make them affordable.

    That said:
    - It's still possible something is wrong with your settings, the Onk or the sub. It's a real shame you don't have the Onk's mic, as audysses can do wonders (tho not necessarily result in booming bass)

Any chance you can borrow a friends sub, or test yours on someone elses receiver? That'd be the quickest way to narrow the possibilities.

LASTLY: What someone wants out of bass is strictly personal. For myself, I want a sub to blend so well with my fronts that I don't even know that it's there. Many on this forum really want the walls to rattle. If that's what you want it's possible the PSW111 isn't your best bet (I've never heard the PSW111 but it's possible that it just leans to more the musical than the loud )

Do you know where I could get an audysses mic? I looked on ebay but the one listed is only for denon recievers. Do I need a specific one?
I am willing to buy one before I return the Sub Woofer,

    Sammy,

I would agree that the Mic thing would work for ya 100%, but you should be able to get things working manually also close to 100% as possible. So without the mic, have you determine if the sub woofer, cable, or the receiver is the problem to many variables. You need to eliminate some as in my post #3, then see what you need to do first.

    Good luck...

BTW turn the sub all the way down before you start playing music or anything as it will be very loud if it does work and it's getting a good signal.

are you listening in stereo or surround mode??? some Onkyos disable the sub output in stereo modes (such as direct or pure audio)...
