Can I assume you did not see the American player lay out the Chinese catcher on a play at the plate? He bowled him over when a slide would have done just fine.

Getting beaned is part of the game.

What's easier to get out of the way from, a 6 foot tall person traveling 15 mph or a 4" baseball traveling 80+ mph?

Running is faster than sliding, so if you have to run over someone to get to the plate, thats acceptable.

BeaNing 6 different people in an Olympic game (aka, best of the best), is not.

Its acceptable if you need to do it (a slide won't cut it/the catcher HAS the ball and will tag you.) Its **** to lay out the catcher when the ball is somewhere on its way to him and he isn't looking at you.

Its the umpires fault if they got up to six bean balls. Its their job to control the game.

you dont run to homeplate to be faster. sliding is indeed faster. not that i am defending the chinese but you run THROUGH the catcher to knock the crap out of him causing him to drop the catch....

It's absolutely acceptable to knock the crap out of a catcher if he/she is blocking home plate. The object is to make the catcher drop the ball, and if they don't have it yet, too bad. It's not the job of the runner to watch where the ball is as they're running bases. That's why we have base coaches.

    thank you.

Sliding is NOT faster...if it was, everyone in track would be sliding through the finish line. Sometimes you're not aware of where the ball is and you just want to get there as fast as possible. Been there, done that many times.

It is, if you do it the proper way, head first. :)

The reason anyone slides in baseball is because the ONLY base you are allowed to over-run is 1st and that is ONLY after you hit the ball and are running your little heart out to get to first base and gain a base hit. If you over run any other base and you lose contact with the bag and someone tags you, you're out.

The reason you run over the catcher is if he is blocking home plate. Then you can plow him down, hopefully he will drop the ball. Your other option is to slide and hope that your drastic change in speed and the smaller area (i.e.: your leg vs your torso) makes the catcher miss the tag. Once home plate is tagged safely, the run is over and the score is logged. You can't over-run home plate because you can't occupy home plate.

If the catcher is not blocking home plate and doesn't have the ball yet and you plow him down, it can be a interference call (yes they do have them in baseball but it's rare to have it called). If he is not blocking home plate and you leave the base line to plow him down, as a runner, you are automatically out.

There are alot of rules but plowing down the catcher, with or without the ball, is, acceptable under quite a few circumstances. Sliding though, is decidedly NOT faster. It is intended to stop you faster without having to slow down your stride and therefore make you susceptible to getting tagged out. It's an avoidance technique, not a speed thing.

If the catcher has home plate blocked, knock the dude out. But if he's just standing on it waiting for a throw to come in from the outfield and you lay him out you'd be wise to watch for a bean ball.

As part of a news report I heard the Chinese were paying "cheerleaders" to sit in the stands and also keeping normal crowds smaller to prevent government protests. Anyone have a link to this allegation from a reputable source? I was in my car when I heard it.

NBC reporting that the age issue of the chinese girls gymnastics team is being investigated by the IOC and may result in medals being stripped from the chinese. FWIW
