Dodd ELP

I have a Dodd ELP for sale. I just bought this Pre about a month ago from Phuz. I would like to get back what I paid for it. $400.00 shipped with about six different pairs of tubes. The unit looks flawless as far as I can Tell. Not a mark or scratch on it any where.

JJ's
EI' Elite Gold Pins
Amperex Gold Pins
Jan Phillips Blue Labels
Jan Phillips Green Labels
GE's

There might be more. I'll include whatever I have with the unit.

This unit has a slight hum that is barely audible. Once the music starts you don't even notice it. I contacted Gary Dodd and he said this is common with some of the ELP's. He said if I wanted to send it in so he could take a look at it and fix what ever it needed to make it dead quite. I just don't want to deal with it. He said he is very busy and didn't know how soon he could get it back to me. So I think I am going to get an Odyssey Candela Tube Pre that matches my Odyssey Amp.

Like I said the hum is not very loud at all and might not bother the new owner. Other than the slight hum the pre sounds amazing and is by far the best sounding pre I have ever had. PERIOD!! If it wasn't for Gary being so backed up I would keep it.

I don't have any pictures of it close up. But if somebody needs some just let me know.

Cheers

Nick

Okay,, all of you youngsters listen up,,,wanting to get into tubes,,this is more than just a little starter pre, its the real thing,,,and you can turn around and sell it,say a year from now and not lose a penny,,these are getting more difficult to find each year,, so if you are on the fence,, jump off and get this Dodd.Thats all I have to say about that(in my Forrest Gump voice).;)
JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

I know! If I had $400 I would have a different first post in this thread!

I've just heard this pre at Nick's house. It's killer. The hum is negligible. And arguably a trade-off when you move towards that tubey goodness.

I'd love to have a Dodd someday, not sure I'm ready to start another 2-channel setup now. Wanted to ask a question that others might be wondering too, does Gary support these for free? Any idea on cost for him to look at it? Might help out if people knew about what to expect cost wise for sending it back to him if they wanted to wait for him to look it over.

It won't be free. He said he will have to take a look at it before he could give me a price.

If it doesn't sell pretty soon I think I will just keep it. The more I listen the more I think I would regret selling it.

I had one of these.....still miss it to this day

one of those "Must try" pieces if you even entertained rolling with a tube pre.

I comment the OP on the disclosure on the buzz, but if its the same one I had (probably is) it is literally non audible to any degree during any audio play.

as with any other Dodd, hopin this stays in the fanily :)

My brother had an ELP with slight hum,, sent it to Gary about 1 year ago,, it came back with the external wal-wartype outboard ps,, total cost was about 65.00 IIRC,, hope this helps,, BTW-- the hum was barely audible to begin with,,and eliminated after the unit came back from Gary.

The hum is hardly audible. But I had to mention it. I would hate for someone to get it and be unhappy with there purchase because of a slight hum.

But like I said. You can barely hear it and once the music starts playing. At any level. You don't notice it. The reason it bothers me is because I know its there. Not because I can hear it. Its just a mind thing with me.

    Thanks for everybodys helpful comments.

    Cheers

I had Gary check mine out as well. It came back with only the slightest of hum. It really depends on the amp it is paired with. I took mine to PF and we hooked it up to a Parasound and there was NO noise whatsoever. Mine has been hooked up to a NAD amp and the hum was only there if you KNOW it is there. It disappears once the music starts. Like George said, the outboard power supply seems to correct any hum issue completely.

i had one with a hum, took it to gary and he added the outboard power transformer but not the power supply. it reduced the hum and the preamp even sounded better. but either way i could not hear the hum from my seat or during music. maybe the ones with outboard power supply fixed the problem but i had sold mine before that upgrade.

I hear you man. But I am hoping to be moving up on the audio food chain.

If I was where I wanted to be financially. I don't think I would ever get rid of the ELP. I do mean ever!!

Unfortunately right now I need to move gear to get better gear.

Not exactly sure what I'm doing. I think I'm outta my mind. I guess I just can't pass on a good deal. I was nowhere near mentally ready to start into tubes (even if entry level).
I guess since I had the LSi9s, and just got the XPA-2 from Earlyb, and still needed a pre....this was money better spent then a low end AVR or even another Onk 805 as a pre.

Note to self: Intercept bank statement before wife gets it. At least this pre being smaller than an amp will be easier to conceal until after the charge is not on any recent statements :D

So-a bit belated but--How does everybody think this will pair up with an XPA-2?

Next up-find a decent source.

I could be wrong. But I don't think the Dodd falls under Entry Level

Last Wensday I Had a XPA-2 brought over to the house for a listening session.

    The system consisted of a

    Dodd ELP
    Raysonic CD128 CDP
    Emotiva XPA-2
    Polk Audio Lsi9's

And it was wonderful. That looks to be about the same setup you are going to have. I don't think you will be disappointed.

If you have any other question about the system. Just let me know and I will be glad to let you know my thoughts.

I can vouch for the sound. That was my Raysonic and XPA-2 with Nick's system.

My Dodd Battery Powered Preamp also sounds excellet with my pair of XPA-2s on my Emerald Physics.

I think you will be fine.

I just saw 'entry level' thrown in there with a few mentions of this pre on the net. So I then just assumed that was what ELP stood for.

    Cool enough.
I'm sure it'll sound better than my iPod directly connected to the amp

    Looking forward to it. :D
