EDIT: ADVIL
Man, i'm surprised you don't need a prescription for this stuff. I got a **** of a toothache (lost a filling) and this stuff kicked in after about 5 minutes. Can't even feel that anything is wrong. Should hold me over until my dentist can get me in to fix it.
Anyone else use this stuff?

Not advil but I've used cough medicine before. That stuff makes me feel like im wasted. Usually I just fall asleep for 12 hours and if I try to wake up before it's worn off I feel drunk or high. I'm not talking about drinkin half the bottle either, just the normal dose for adults (like a tablespoon or whatever it is). I guess I'm just sensitive to that stuff.

I can see how easy it would be to get yourself addicted to pain meds. I feel great. I very rarely take ibuprofen or anything when I have a headache, so I may be especially sensitive since it's probably been 10 years since I took one.
-
I had oxycodone for my wisdom teeth removal(I'm immune to codeine) and that stuff puts you to sleep everytime. Now I understand the whole opium den thing.
Definite side effects though. -
I took hydrocodone when I had a tooth problem. I spent the next day puking from it. I'm not a fan of taking pills and I'm certainly not a fan of throwing up with a sore tooth.

Those puppies actually work better for my back pain then any of the narcotics the doctors have tried on me.
For me the Advil kills the actual pain , where as the narcotics just get me stoned but it still hurts. Plus I can still drive while on the Advil...its a win/win.
They actually make both Oxycodone and Hydrocodone with Advil in it ( The Hydro/advil combo is called Vicoprofen...now THAT works awesome ) now as opposed to Tylenol in it, because when on it long term that Tylenol is bad **** for your kidneys. The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -
Oxycodone kickes arse. I thought codeine was strong but hydrocodone (almost as strong as oxycodone) really made me feel good. No wonder Brett Favre was so hooked into it, you have to be careful not to start taking it just to feel good.
Ibuprofen is ok for headaches but for the occasional back/neck pain I do need to take codeine majority of the time. Luckily it's not that often anymore. -

APAP (Paracetemol/Acetaminophen) is actually liver toxic, not kidneys. This is the reason why those addicted to oxy-hydrocodone/codeine usually filter out the APAP in it with cold water. -
Hydrocodone is codeine based, you know....
Hydrocodone (Vicodin) is made from codeine and thebaine.
Oxycodone is made from just thebaine.I've used cough medicine before. That stuff makes me feel like im wasted. It's both.... http://www.sixwise.com/newsletters/06/11/22/the_toxic_risks_of_acetaminophen_every_consumer_should_know.htm ....Liver even at recommended levels and Kidneys for long term use like I mentioned. The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -

The VERY day that I ever took one of those pills to just feel good...would be the day I flush the whole lot of them down the toilet. Thats why I use Advil like 80% and the Vicoprofen just when the pain is really kicking my ****.The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -
Liver and kidneys both get stuck with the **** job of filtering out toxins (or medicines) you put in your body, so they also get stuck with damage from doing it too much.

I don't think kidney damage is a proven theory, at least not yet. However, liver damage is, and ibuprofen is much less liver toxic. Of course it has its own side-effects, stomach problems being the #1. -

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who get addicted to the narcotic value in it. I admit hydrocodone does make me feel extremely good. One of the reasons why I told my wife not to get those extra 30 pills of 10mg hydro after her c-section (I was taking 5mg after my surgery so I can only imagine what 10mg would do). I was afraid of the temptation as I've always been very receptive to opiates, and I've had a quite a few surgeries where I have been introduced to them. People are different, she said they did not feel any narcotic effect (but then again, she was in real pain).
I know a few people who take it to "back pain" but in reality they are using it as an excuse to use it as leisure drug. It's not a path you want to take. -
In relation to the addiction topic, sometimes I feel like doctors should be a bit more responsible when writing out these prescriptions. I had a very minor surgery removing a cyst from my back (just under the skin, local anaesthesia type stuff) a year or so ago, and the doctor wrote me a prescription for Vicodin.... FIFTY pills. I needed maybe one or two days of pain medication (and probably could have gotten by with OTC stuff), and suddenly I have 45 pills of a potentially fun and addictive narcotic lying around my house. At the very least I could have been the type of person to sell it and there's more illegal drugs on the street.
Luckily I'm not into pills or the illegal drug trade but the doctor didn't know that; and even being who I am I can't say I wasn't tempted to take a few recreationally before I flushed 'em to resist the temptation (cuz they sure do make you feel nice). If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
No narcotic effect?
When the pain is severe, the relief makes you blind.
In my case, oxycodone obviously made me feel warm(more than alcohol, but not quite fever warm). I also had tingling in my legs and couldn't stay standing for more than 5 minutes before feeling faint. Oh, and it messes with your stomach pretty bad. -
I have used many differerent Narcotic Pain Meds for my Crohn's and without them I would be unable to function at times. Some definatley are better than others for long term use. I currently use Percocet as my pain med of choice so that I can still function and not be in a drug induced haze all day long.
I also use regular over the counter meds like Tylenol or Advil if the pain is only minor. And those Advil Liqui Gels rock for back and tooth pain.
That being said I had trouble after a hospital stay last year with what I can best describe as an addiction to the pain med Dilaudid. This stuff makes morphine seem like an aspirin. And after 7 days of continual use under a hospitals care I had trouble with getting off it. That was a rough couple of weeks for sure.
I have never recieved a pain med for any Dental work even though it could have helped for a bad root canal. And my Gastro Dr is usually pretty stiff on giving pain meds on regular intervals.
Hey Bobman you still have those pills?? I KEED.... -

Dilaudid? This is the good stuff, as I'm told by doctors.
Def need to have a conversation with the doc before taking that stuff. -
OTC pain meds don't really seem to do much for me so I don't usually take them. When I've had prescriptions for codiene/hydocodone/etc. they make me really sleepy and druggy feeling. I don't see what's to like about that feeling so I really don't see how I would ever get addicted to it.
Waking up in post-op once I was in *excruciating* pain. The doc's gave me an IV drip of morphiene -- now that was heavy. They had to put a nurse by my side to remind me to breath  -
This thread kicks ****.

When I first hurt my back they were 10's....then 7.5's....then 5's all Vicodin.
Then when I switched to Vicoprofen...I just looked...they are 7.5's ( Next time in I will have him give me 5's of the Vicoprofen if available )
I saw too many friends go down that road of addiction when I was younger ...losing houses...cars...wives and kids.... and it scared the **** out of me enough then to last a few lifetimes.
Luckily , me and pain have been friends for years ( Fighting in tournaments mostly giving pain but you still feel it the next day ...football...motocross....7 surgeries...etc ) that my pain threshold is really high.
What actually bothers a lot more then pain is numbness ( For me anyways )...and the docs dont have a pill for thatThe first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -

It only comes in 7.5s -

To this day, whenever my back acts up I pop a couple of Advil and within about 30 minutes I realize that I had forgotten that I had back pain. Yes Dilaudid is good stuff for pain but man is it a fun time also. It sucks for me because alot of other pain meds do nothing for me. Even Morphine is pretty useless. A high tolerance for both Pain + Meds = Dilaudid.PhantomOG wrote:Waking up in post-op once I was in *excruciating* pain. The doc's gave me a shot of morphiene -- now that was heavy. Morphine is serious stuff for most people. I love how they try to wake you up in recovery and all you want to do is sleep. Although not remembering to breathe is bad.
Quick story, About 2am I had a bad blockage and went to the ER to make sure I wasn't dying. Anyway my wife went with me. The nurse came in and did her thing giving me an IV and checking the vitals, and then went to talk to the Dr. She came back a bit later with the biggest shot of Morphine I had ever seen. She gave me the shot and waited for me to fall asleep. When this didn't happen she left the room to see someone and my wife fell asleep. About 5 minutes later she cam back in the room and said quote "I see the Morphine is working?" I said "Yes, she feels much better now". -

Sounds like to me that you got overdosed. -

Idiots, when they did my second to last nerve root block ( Think 5" needles into the spine wide awake with no pain killer before or during...only after ) doubled the maximum Demerol ( IV ..not pills ) anybody should get....at least they said oops
The way I knew this was I was laying there and then thought....hmmmm when was the last time I took a breath ....then one nurse came over and said I looked blue. One nurse hadnt written down ( Yet she said) that I was already given the IV demerol so I got it twice.....that was not a nice feeling to say the least. I ended up staying there 4 extra hours then normal...they gave me something IV to counteract it...dont know what. So I know how you felt. The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -

Advil, along with most everything else available OTC, was at one time by prescription only. -

Possibly, I have no idea. It was the strangest feeling in the world though. I honestly had to think about and force myself to breathe. Every couple of minutes I would slip off to sleep only to be woken by the nurse and told to breathe.

In response to 7.5 mg Vicoprofen:
Cut them in half.
