PS3 as media server??

I hijacked a thread earlier and thought I should start a new one...

I know and understand that you can swap out the internal HD of the PS3 for bigger. Can you also load MP3's or other song formats on an external HD and connect to the PS3?

Also, will the PS3 rip songs from a CD onto the HD?

Or...I currently have a PC set up as a media PC, but the way I have it setup is somewhat inconvenient. Is there a way that the PS3 can see the PC over my network and play songs of the PC harddrive?

You can rip cd's but from my understanding it is defaulted to rip them at 128 or 256 i dont think you have the option. If was you I would invest in an apple tv and use the built in one on there as that is what it was mead for. or do what me and the neighbor did buy a big hard drive for the computer and put all the music on that than alow the apple tv to just use the music in itunes on that hard drive for its music "the reason we did this ws because we did it in lossles and had over 7k songs"

Yes you can set up your computer to stream content over your network if you have one. And yes, you can load up an external with mp3s. I would choose the former option though. try googling a walk through. Should be easy enough.

You can change the recording rate on the ps3. I have mine set to aac 320 and it sounds great.

I have a 500 gig external connected via usb. Two things doing it this way....the file system on the external must be fat32 and the hard drive must have the same folders as a PS3. Game Music Photo Video. Works great for me and is still portable and usable for on other setups like my computer.

You can have your PC stream all the media over your network, to your ps3, for playback over your audio system(which is what I do). Your gonna need a media server like TVersity, or something along those lines.

Thanks for your help. I got the PS3 streaming from my media PC last night through Media Player 11. I have some serious library maintenance to do, though, because I have a lot of music in Apple Lossless.

If you use TVersity, it will pass ALC, and PS3 will read it, eliminating the need for WMP. I have found TVersity much more versatile.

Ok, this tversity things looks interesting... but what exactly does it do? I install it on my network connected PC right? And then what does it help with? I can already find and play shared mp3's/videos/pics on the PC so what additional functionality does this software provide? Is this just for streaming web sources?

TVersity is the way to go. It will also decode FLAC on the fly to PCM for the PS3 if you want to go the lossless way.

so you run tversity on the PC and then connect to it on the PS3 through the web browser?
ok, I read it connects to media server. Have to try this out when I get home tonight.

No web browser involved. It shows up in the XMB like a networked computer. (which is essentially how it's set up)

You will have to manually set up which folders are shared by TVersity, and it takes some time for it to build the library, but after that, giddy-up.

If you have more than one pc on your network, you can install and run TVersity on those as well. I have a small home recording studio set up in my basement, and pipe my test mixes upstairs to the main system for playback. (it sure beats burning a cd each time!) The drawback, is that a pc has to be running to run TVersity. I'd love it, if the PS3 had NAS support, it would eliminate the need for TVersity, except for transcoding video on the fly.

It's a far more complete solution than WMP 11. There are several ways to convert video files, and it's not something I've played with a whole lot yet, so I'll let others steer you on that one.
There is one program (also free) that I've used that avoids having TVersity transcode the videos to a format the PS3 understands. http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/

Very straight forward and easy to use.

Hmm... I wonder if my PC is beefy enough to stream HD. Or my wireless network connection stable enough for that matter.

From what I understand, it takes at least a duo-core, or quad, to stream HD. Not sure I'd attempt it wirelessly, either. I got tired of futzing with the wi-fi on ps3, and ran some cat-5. Much improved. As always, ymmv.

I prefer to just use a big external usb drive. Seems old school 'cause you have to walk it from pc to the ps3. But nothing beats the stability and pure speed of a local connection.

I've been reading about TVersity and ,man, that sounds like the ticket. I may start building a flac library, but it also looks like people have been able to stream Apple Lossless as well, which is what a good portion of my library consists of.

I thought about just adding a hard drive to the PS3 and moving files over, but I have two 250gb hard drives in my simple media PC and backup one to the other every 3 days, so no need to worry about losing data and its automated so I don't have to worry about being lazy.
