Audio Dialogue problems

Somebody please help me.
I have a Yamaha entry level htr 5635 receiver(85 watts/channel) with Polk 30s front and rear. I have a Polk CS2 center and a Velodyne sub-woofer. The problem that I have is, when I play DVD movies the dialogue is not as clear as when I`m listening to the FM stereo, or 5 channel FM stereo. When watching DVDs I need to put the captions on so that I can clearly understand what is being said. I have tried using the 5 channel stereo selection on DVDs and still have the same problem. I have also tried different DVD players with no success. I have gone from a CS1 to a CS2 Polk center. I`m presently using a Samsung up-convert progressive DVD player. Does anyone think that my problem may be due to the entry level receiver? My TV viewing area is approximately 16x11/ This is part of a room that is 21x21 which houses the kitchen and the family room(AV set-up). The front speakers and the center are approximately 16 feet from my sitting area. my surround speakers are elevated approximately 3 to 4 feet behind the seating area. I have tried all the different receiver settings to improve the dialogue with no improvement. Other then buying another receiver I have run out of options. I`m afraid that if I do get another receiver that there would not be an improvement. If anyone can shed some light on this it would be much appreciated.

I dont think its anything but the speaker. I recently went through this same problem with my father's center channel. We had to lower the bass control almost all the way, becuase dialogue was muffled.
Result, tryed different center speakers until he landed on a speaker that did the trick.
So after reading your problem, I believe its the speaker. Try another one of a different size, maybe smaller?Monitor 7b's front

joeygrand3, are you using a optical cable from your DVD player to your receiver?
you can go into the menu of your receiver and raise the volume level for your center channel.
this is a very common problem people talk about. not being able to hear the dialog.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Not to jump to conclusions, but I dont think its a volume problem. More of a clarity problem. If I'm not mistaken.Monitor 7b's front

well that is a different problem then.. his tweeter might be blown if the dialog is muddy = not clear.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I was thinking the same thing. Best he just try another speaker from BB or CC to see. Then return it if its not right.Monitor 7b's front

You can all set your center to "NONE" or "Phantom" and the mains will receive the info that you center would have. I found this sounded better in my setup."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

this is what I would do.. unplug your front, surround speakers.. and turn off or unplug your subwoofer. only leaving your center channel up and running. play a dvd movie and see how the center channel sounds. you should know pretty quick if something is blown on it.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?
